I had SUCH a good mail day yesterday. I just HAULED IT IN.
FIRST, I got one of Under Construction‘s wooden hand-painted postcards, and since I (1) collect postcards and (2) felt like I might DIE if I didn’t get one of these and (3) didn’t know if I’d get one or not until it arrived, it was a very happy mail day indeed.
SECOND, I got my order of postcards from Lila Ruby King on Etsy. I love Lila Ruby King stuff, and the postcards were even better than I’d hoped. Now how am I going to SEND any of them? THEY ARE TOO SPECIAL TO USE UP.
THIRD, I got a GPS with our tax refund, and it arrived yesterday. I am so happy to have it, or at least I will be after I get over the hurdle of taking it out of the box and setting it up. I wince a little as I tell you this, because it seems like bad form to be announcing an expensive electronic purchase when I read your blogs and know some of you would use that same money for, like, BREAD AND MILK AND ANTIBIOTICS FOR YOUR BABY. But I wanted to tell you about it anyway, first because it was on such a good price, second because I always want to know what someone else buys, and third because this is a post about my happy mail day and this was part of it. A GPS! It’s not an electronic device, it’s ANTI-ANXIETY MEDICATION.
Lurve. You’re talking me into going back to Post Crossing. I had taken a hiatus.
My husband is getting me a GPS for Mother’s Day and I am SO EXCITED!!! I get lost so easily, and as the kids get older I am having to find my way to all kinds of new places for their various activities and friends. It will definitely be anti-anxiety medication for me too!
He is getting me a Garmin. What did you get?
I support anti-anxiety in any and all forms.
My husband has had a GPS for awhile now (let’s face it- my “travels” around Tiny Town’s 4 streets doesn’t really warrant one “necessary” for me, but he travels all over our part of the state) and we’ve just recently begun to take the kids Geocaching and we LOVE IT. It’s a great family activity- gives us a “mission” for “going for a walk”… and anyway, just wanted to mention it because I think your family might like it too. It’s like treasure hunting! For kids and adults alike!
Oh I’ll be VERY INTERESTED to hear how you like the GPS. I have waffled on buying one for years, worried that it would make my already-lousy sense of direction even worse, and then if it broke I would be unable to find my way home. Like when my cell phone got lost and I couldn’t remember anyone’s phone numbers, including MY OWN.
I love that wooden post card. Very cool! I adore my GPS – I am extrememly directionally challenged and it has saved my butt more than once.
Yay GPS! We have one too and it is a LIFE SAVER. Torsten gets lots so often, and gets distracted and misses turns and so forth, and the beauty of the GPS is that no matter what dumb thing you do, including ignoring its directions, it always recalculates for you. Some of the best money we have spent, for sure.
I love good mail days. Getting the mail is the high point of my day and it is always so disappointing when there is nothing good. But it almost makes it worth it when all the cool stuff comes at the same time.
I love my GPS and will not ever be able to live without one. My husband’s head nearly explodes every time he tells me to go north and I look at him blankly. The “go home” feature is the best when you have no idea how you got to where you are which, for me, is often.
Good mail days are the best. They can really change your outlook. The wooden postcard is just too cool for school. Wish I had read that post sooner!
my life has LITERALLY CHANGED since the advent of the gps. no more wondering if you’ve passed your turn, and wondering how much longer to drive before pulling a u turn and looking for the street in the other direction! LOVE LOVE LOVE.
We moved last year from a big city that I had lived in for 12 years and knew like the back of my hand to an even bigger city that was brand new to me driving-wise. I told my husband during potential-moving discussions that my caveat was that we had to purchase a GPS. It is the best money spent in our move, hands down. Occasionally, the directions it gives don’t make the most sense (if you already know where you’re going), but it will always get you where you need to be and back home.
Mama Bub: Yes. It took nearly 10 years for me to finally convince my husband that I was directionally challenged and when he said things like “I’ll meet you on the North side of the building” I was going to look at him blankly and insist he tell me where the hell that was. Who says “meet you on the north side??” Ugh.
a) Frame the postcards in cute little frames, then you can keep them forever AND it will be a cute, arty addition to your home.
b) We have a GPS because I have the world’s worst sense of direction and I rarely use it because I’m scared it’s going to send me into a construction zone or something. I am very lame.

My husband is a geocaching nut, (but I’m a better finder! sshhh!) I think we are just shy of 900 finds in about 18 months and are about to host an event. You should give it try swistle, think how impressed your boys would be!
yay for mail. Our gps has been a total lifesaver since I have NO sense of direction. My 4 year old can get around town better than me I swear ;)

GPS is awesome! It avoids so MANY fights between my husband and I.
For the record, I bought a GPS last year or 2 years ago – can’t remember – for my mom’s birthday. And I found such a good deal on it, that I got the same one for me and now I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT IT. Sometimes I turn it on even when I know where I’m going bc at least on mine, the “arrival time” is STUNNINGLY accurate and adjusts according to the speed you are going + traffic. So, if I’m say, meeting friends somewhere, I can say with 99% accuracy: “I’ll be there at 5:53.” or whatever. Not that that’s actually NECESSARY, but it is helpful + cool and I love it.

Be joyful in your GPS! You know, something is ALWAYS insensitive to SOMEONE. Mother’s Day – somebody had a horrible mother and/or their mother died. Groundhog Day – somebody’s mother was maimed by a groundhog. We must cease to be eternally politically correct and just be free to be happy about something! And hope that people who care about us are happy for us! (Dismounting soapbox.) And I LOVE that postcard!! Oops, did somebody’s brother die by a falling wooden postcard? Forgive me. I’ve just had two glasses of wine.
You will love your GPS! I won one a few years ago at a work thing and I was CONVINCED that it was the stupidest thing I could have won. I thought about selling it on Ebay.
But it turns out I love it. I travel quite a bit for work and it has been a lifesaver, no more mapquest directions! It isn’t always perfect (my map was outdated when I got it and I haven’t bothered getting it updated) so at times the little voice is sure that I am offroading it :) And sometimes you feel like you are going in circles, but I always get where I am supposed to.
It is also nice if you are in a different city and need to find a Target or something like that.
Erm, I didn’t mean to belittle the GPS. I just meant that I am a really lame technologically challenged person who is probably the only person who owns a GPS but is too scared to use it. My husband thinks I’m nuts, BTW. Meanwhile, I continue to Mapquest everything because I’m convinced that’s somehow better. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your GPS – I am certainly not the normal.
ohmigod the postcards are so cute I had to look away because I do not need another obsession. Have you tested the GPS yet? I’ve been wanting to get one but have been hesitating. It hasn’t told you to turn into the river has it? (Doctor Who flashbacks…)
