Schitt’s Creek; College Acceptances/Rejections; Brach’s Jellybean Nougats; Wee Little Rainbow Flower Spoons

I am finally watching Schitt’s Creek. I was glad I’d heard that the first season was a little patchy, quality-wise; I’d also heard just the right amount of hype about the rest of it: enough to motivate me to watch, but not enough to be impossible for it to live up to. I have finished the first season and like it enough to make me enthusiastic to watch more. I loved Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara already, and now I also love Daniel Levy and Emily Hampshire and Annie Murphy and a whole bunch of other people.

William has gotten back acceptances/rejections from all but one of the colleges he applied to, so we are nearly in the stage where we have to look the finalists over and make a decision. He seems very cranky and tense lately, and I don’t know how much of it is about this, and how much of it is about being 18 and staying up too late and then oversleeping and having to rush around in the morning in a huge panic and then blaming his younger siblings for being in his way by existing. He sure seems a lot more comfortable swearing in front of parents than I was as a high school student. Or even than I am now.

Do you remember last year, my desperate quest to find Brach’s Marshmallow Eggs? I still have more than a full bag of those left from last year; it turns out I wanted to eat about three eggs total and then I was done, possibly permanently. However, during that quest I impulsively acquired a bag of Brach’s Jellybean Nougats, and those were a much bigger success: I ate them all and looked forward to getting more this year. (I’m not saying they’re not kind of gross, I am only saying I ate them all and looked forward to getting more.) AND THEN I COULD NOT FIND THEM. I went to the same Walgreens where I found them last year, and they did not have them. I used the product finder on the Brach’s site, and it said they were not available anywhere near me. (I did find them on Amazon, but with very mixed reviews.) But then my friend Morgan, who has a knack for finding things other people are looking for, found them at a different Walgreens, so I am going over there today to buy half a dozen bags—or maybe in light of the Marshmallow Egg Situation it would be more sensible to buy one bag and see how it goes.

I bought these wee little flower spoons and I love them:

They are VERY SMALL. I knew from the reviews that they would be small, and I’d looked at a ruler to make sure I knew how small, but if I had not done both of those things I think I would have been quite surprised by how small. They are the right size for putting like half a teaspoon of sugar into a teacup, but they are pretty short if you wanted to stir sugar into a coffee mug—and they are kind of shallow for transporting even a small amount of sugar without spilling. Really they are not at all practical. Here is one of the wee little flower spoons in a line-up with a measuring teaspoon, a toddler spoon, a regular flatware spoon, and a flatware soup spoon:

I use them every day, because one of the kids needs a daily dose of a medicine that gets stirred into a small cup of juice; he loves these spoons, and is picky about whether the medicine is fully stirred-in or not, so I leave the spoon in the cup for him to appreciate and use.

My husband and I just finished the first season of Schitt’s Creek; I am eager to watch more, he is a little meh. It was a good season, and we both enjoyed it, but neither of us had heard that the first season was a bit patchy. I am glad to hear that and hopefully knowing that there’s an upward trajectory will encourage him to keep watching. I adore Daniel Levy. I do have a difficult time telling people I’m watching the show, though — it really feels like swearing and, unlike William, I have a hard time swearing in front of most people.

The flower spoons are SO PRETTY.

I am going to keep remembering this line and laughing. Let’s hope I don’t have to be in any situations that require solemnity.

your tiny flower spoons are adorable and I just have to tell you how much I appreciate you lining each spoon up with the lines of your cutting board/butcher block/table top. It made my OCD heart happy to see them lined up and spaced so neatly.

Looking at the picture of the different spoons, I thought: I can’t believe one of Swistle’s children is actually called Maisy! Then I looked up the name and realized it’s Maisy Mouse… I’m from Germany, where Maisy is called Mausi (=little mouse), so that was new to me, but gave me a good chuckle.

    1. I am OBSESSED with Schitt’s Creek. Every season gets better and better.
    2. Cadbury used to have eggs with orange cream inside and they were SO good, but I only saw that at, like, two 7-11s a few times and they don’t seem to exist anymore. It is very sad–and probably very fortunate.

Those spoons are adorable! But they sure are tiny, thank you for the line-up.
Together with your description of how hard it is to transport even a small amount of sugar spill-free, I’m wondering if they are maybe made to transport sugar cubes rather than loose sugar, and to be used with dainty tea cups instead of proper mugs. I’m picturing them on a table with all the trappings of an afternoon tea party, including scones and clotted cream.

I appreciate the spoon lineup too! I hadn’t realized how short they are, and I have a distinct preference for HUGE mugs, so they might not be a practical choice for me. I did think that in our house the sugar would be transferred via the sugar spoon we keep in our sugar bowl, and the pretty flower spoons would only be needed to stir, so I may get them, then if they’re really too short gift them to my mother. We have tea after dinner there every weekend, and she too keeps a spoon permanently in her sugar bowl.

As for seasonal candy, about 3 Valentine’s Days ago I was introduced to Hershey’s kisses filled with a cherry cream goo, and LOVED them… and have not seen them since. I’m not convinced they can still be purchased here. I should definitely check Amazon, which I hadn’t thought of before. Thanks!

Last time you posted about colorful silverware I saw the flower teaspoons and almost bought them. In fact, I have left them in my “save for later” section. I don’t think I will buy them now. I want a pretty spoon for the stevia I use in my tea. The spoons are so adorable that I think I could deal with the short size but I am clumsy and to boot now that I am old (ish) my hands shake a bit, so there would be a mess to deal with. Bummer. I like them a lot. Glad you found a good use for them.

My second oldest, Eddie, is also on the verge of making a final college decision. I think he knows which one it is going to be, but has not commited yet. I was very excited by his college search, but it has been more irritating than I expected for many reasons . . . which might provide me with material for a blog post sometime soon.

Congrats on the spoons- they are cute. My kids have lost so much of our silverware over the years, I need to replace it. Cannot bring myself to pick something new because I am crazy about our current/incomplete stuff.

I have seen bits and pieces of Schitts Creek. Maybe I will rent season 1 from the library.

You posted something about coffee spoons a while back, prompting me to scroll through Amazon listings for “coffee spoons.” I ended up buying some cat spoons with paws that hook onto the edge of the mug. My kids went nuts over them. So of course I had to go back and find similar dog spoons. They make me and my kids so very happy.

I binged Schitt’s Creek on Netflix recently, and loved it. But now I’m mad our cable subscription doesn’t include POP tv (or whatever the channel is called that it airs on originally). I agree each season was better than the previous, and it has really hit its stride IMO! I’ll have to go back and check on this, but when I “completed” season 4 on Netflix (about 3 weeks ago), the season finale of season 4 was not yet available… apparently they did a weird thing where the season finale episode was Christmas-themed, and they wanted it to air around Christmas, so the show took a multiple months-long break between the 2nd to last season 4 episode and the season 4 finale. Since that episode just aired in December 2018, it’s not on Netflix yet (or wasn’t as of 3 weeks ago).

Being in the midst of the cranky and tense stage of the college process (this stage seems to erupt numerous times in this process) I wonder if it seems any different the second time around? And is it any easier for you (not William) because you have gone though it before or just as painful because a) different kids or b) all change is awful? Or c)….?

I was a lot less freaked-out this time, since everything was familiar. And there were a few things where we avoided freak-outs because we had near-disasters the first time—like, we didn’t sign up for SATs in time, and had to pay some late fees and so forth. But it’s still just awful! The whole thing is just so awful and time-consuming and stressful!

Thanks for confirming that it really is awful. My son has options that seemed so great until he was waitlisted at other options and that has cast a shadow on any sense of certainty. I am less sure he is as worried about the certainty factor than I am. The idea that I really may not know where he’ll be until he walks out the door this summer produces so much anxiety (for me) and I HAVE to think for him, too, but getting a lot of “what are you feeling?” answers from him has never been easy.

I think those are espresso spoons to be used with the teeny tiny cups espresso is supposed to be served in.

    And they are flipping adorable.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your posts about your cranky older teens, because my older teen is cranky and I can tell my husband that this is a common complaint about the age group. It’s such a relief.

I really appreciate how precisely you lined up the bottom of the spoons with the line on the board or counter, whatever you used. Not only is it good for the comparison, but it’s very aesthetically pleasing. And highlights the cuteness of the spoon! Thank you.
