Mental Exercise

I made a total mess of an Old Navy order. Just messed up at every turn, so that I ended up paying shipping on a single item, then hours later realizing I never even checked for other colors and placing a second order that, if I’d combined it with that single item, would have eliminated the need to pay shipping; then realizing too late that maybe I could have CANCELED the first order BEFORE placing the second order; then the very next morning there was a better coupon than when I ordered.

Well. This is one of those situations that is probably worth ten dollars just for the excellent practice Letting Insignificant Stuff Go. Let’s say I spent even TWENTY DOLLARS more than I had to, it’s still fine. I will get the items I want (THE LIGHTWEIGHT HOODIE. I love it SO MUCH), and I would rather HAVE the items than NOT have them because I couldn’t make myself get over the $7 shipping mistake and the “not being psychic and knowing the prices would be lower the next day” mistake. (This almost happened. I almost didn’t place the second order, because of the shipping I’d ALREADY PAID AND COULDN’T GET BACK. Because if I didn’t place the second order, then it still made sense that I’d had to pay shipping for the first one. That is what passes for LOGIC around here.) AND ALSO: I see that the color I wanted most is out of stock this morning in my size, so if I HAD waited, I would have MISSED it.

And not even two weeks ago I was KICKING myself for not ordering more of the lightweight hoodies while I still could, and wondering if maybe I could find them on eBay, and if you had said to me, “Well, actually I have two of them, brand new, in your size, but you’ll have to pay $5 each more than you paid for your first one…,” I would have said “GIVE THEM TO ME RIGHT NOW, WHO CARES ABOUT $10???” Having a couple colors inexplicably come back into stock in my size is GOOD news.

So. Everything is really FINE, and there is no need to compare “What could have been” to “What is,” especially when “What is” is NOT VERY MUCH WORSE THAN “What could have been.” We are not talking here about a tragically-missed opportunity for love or happiness, we are talking about ACCIDENTALLY PAYING A LITTLE MORE THAN I HAD TO FOR SOME CLOTHING.

I let that stuff really get to me too – I’ll let it bother me for ages. It’s so hard when you’re a person who’s usually so good about sales & deals.

And I LOVE those hoodies – have four!

I want you to appreciate that I took the time to come here and say “I do the exact same thing, mental-gymnastics-wise” en route to buying myself some hoodies.

I know JUST the hoodies you are talking about and they are so divine. Well worth the extra cost and mental anguish (!) to just GET THEM ON your body.

Those are cute hoodies! I need to check the Canadian site to see if they carry them. So, don’t know if this is worth your time or not, I regularly purchase items from the Old Navy/Gap dot ca site. I’ve had items go on sale the next day and I just call in. I kindly explain the situation. They refund my money and it doesn’t change my order status. I *think* you have 14 days. Prob some small print. But I haven’t had an issue yet.

As always, it is a great morning when I get to enjoy my coffee with a new post from you! :)

I did this a week ago today because the brick and mortar store employee “couldn’t find” my size in the hiking boot even though her handy dandy hand held thingy said they were somewhere in the store. This store inexplicably stacks all their shoe department items in their boxes on the highest shelves in the store and in order to look for my size, she had to walk aisles and aisles while visually scanning the top shelves from far far away to find boxes that look similar to the box this boot was in, and then I have no IDEA how she would’ve gotten the box down had she found it. I suppose I would have had to wait another 30 minutes for a ladder to appear. ANYWAY, she said she couldn’t find it and I was so frustrated (and hot because I was standing amidst a billion shoppers in my winter coat) by that time that I ordered it online and paid $7 shipping. And now I’ve discovered I need a half size bigger SO I MIGHT HAVE TO GO BACK TODAY TO THE STUPID STORE and someone will once again have to search the shelves, OR I can pay another $7 to get the right size.

I have been looking for the right winter hiking boot since last year so I can comfortably walk the dogs in the winter. So far this year, I’ve walked in my walking athletic shoes and froze my toes and I’ve suffered in my not-intended-for-that-kind-of-walking boots.

Mental exercises in justifying the shipping will haunt me all day today.

I just did this the other week and I emailed customer service and they’ll refund you the difference one time per order as a courtesy.

These kind if things make me want to beat myself up too. Good for you for letting it go (or trying to) and understanding it’s a small price to pay. Old navy/gap had a very confusing checkout though! I gotta give it to you! You can buy from both stores and check out, but the totals are different in the different checkout pages… It’s just a mess. I get so excited about my purchase and sometimes jump the gun to checkout because I hate it when someone takes what is in my cart by checking out before I do and taking last in my or my kids size. You could call and see how their cutomer service is… I bought a recliner at target, THEN got a coupon I was waiting for and weeks later called and got my giant discount applied after the fact as after it had already shipped. Seems like they could waive shipping since you places that second order. However that is not your point… Your point is tryin to live wih this. And see? I can’t! :) it bothers me too much!

Just try to think of the money you saved by purchasing sale items. You didn’t mention they were on sale, but you did say that a better coupon showed up the next morning, so logic says you didn’t pay full price. Anyway, you probably saved MORE than you paid in shipping fees, right? So if you don’t end up ahead, at least you might end up even. Either way, new hoodies heading your way next week! They are wonderful!

For me, it fit just how I hoped. I basically wear only Old Navy perfect tees, and I ordered the same size in hoodie that I wear in perfect tee, and it was just right: not too tight, not huge. I’m not sure if it fits generously or tightly, because I’m not sure if I wear the tee generously or tightly: styles seem very very fitted to me right now, so I tend to order to get the looseness I like; someone who ordered their exact size might find it tight, because maybe I’m ordering a size up, is what I mean. The hoodie is loose-ish when not zipped up—that is, I wouldn’t describe it as “snug” or “fitted.” But I wouldn’t call it “baggy” or “oversized,” either. If that helps. (I feel like this doesn’t help.)

I asked my mom, and she said: “I’d say it’s sized just as shown. That is, it’s not one of those over-sized-type zip-up sweatshirts, but more form fitted. On the other hand, I don’t feel like it’s tight, even over a long-sleeved shirt. I did order L, not medium, but … I always wear size L shirts now as well. I’d say it fit exactly as I was expecting and hoping — and I’ve washed it several times and I don’t think it’s shrunk.”

I would not be able to Let It Go until after I called to see if they’d fix it for me after the fact. I need to take a bit more of your perspective on things like this I think.

Jenny- I got a size M, and when it’s zipped, I’d call it fitted, but not tight.
Like, if I want to lounge around in a loose, roomy sweatshirt, I don’t reach
for that one first. Mostly I wear it unzipped, though.
