Kitten Shower

Today I took the four older kids to a “kitten shower.” It’s an annual fundraising event thrown by our local animal shelter. It’s like a baby shower, except you bring presents for…um, the kittens.

And that’s all we did. Yep. We just brought our gift, which was kitten food and some cat toys, and we dropped them off, and we looked at the kittens. And that’s all.

Really. We looked at the kittens, maybe we bought some raffle tickets or something, but that’s all.

We won one of the raffles, too! It was a cat basket, full of cat toys and cat food! Pretty awesome.

Okay, we also had a snack. We had a snack at the kitten shower, and we also learned a lot about cats from an informational video about cat adoption.

Oh, and we used their bathroom. Yes, we also did that.

Oh, and we took home a party favor.

It’s a kitten! She’s three months old, and we don’t know what to name her! And if she keeps purring so loud she’s going to SPRAIN something!

I knew that was coming. Or at least I hoped so as I kept reading.

How is she being received into the family? & by family I mean Mouse and the young boy (why can’t I remember what you finally named him? Sorry!), not the humans.

Oh so cute. My kitties (now a year old) purred loudly non-stop when we first got them. I read online that they purr to let you know that everything’s okay, so she must be pretty happy!

She’s still confined to one room—we let her out and she immediately hid, so we’re taking it a little slower. Both other cats have hissed at her and she has hissed at them, so…uh. We’ll see!

If I could guarantee a new kitten wouldn’t pee on stuff, I’d totally get one! As it stands the one 7-yo Maine Coon and my dog are the two easiest pets on the face of the planet, and I know getting another animal would be tempting fate.

That being said, sine she’s a purrer, you should name her Jennipurr, Jennie for short.

No offense for any Jennifers here, of course.

Our black and white kitty is named Coco, if that helps. But warning: I’m not sure how savvy you are about PET names, but Coco is a top-of-the-charts name for pets this year. I’m not sure when the Pet’s Security name list comes out for 2009, but it’s sure to be in the top 10. ;)

Yep I totally knew what would be at the end of that post as soon as I read where you went lol.

Kitten is totally adorable! I think the name totally should have something to do with that adorable black splotch underneath her nose.

Cute, my kids are jealous, the allergies in this house prevent kittens. Reading the ending, my peripheral vision picked up “SPRAIN” and thought you were naming your cat “Saran”….never mind that didn’t come out as funny as I found it. I’d better go to bed :)

She’s so sweet! Good choice! Any story behind why you ended up with her?

(and I would totally name her Nose or a nose-related name or maybe after someone with a great nose.)

Were you planning on getting a kitten or were you simply overwhelmed by the cuteness you couldn’t restrain yourself. That can happen with kittens. They send out cute vibes and you can’t shield yourself from them.

    Awwwwww! She is adorable!

She looks like a Guinevere to me.

Are the kids good about cleaning up after the cats? I would love to get a kitty, but I know I would end up being the only one who would clean its sick and its litter tray, and I don’t have the time to do that and pick up after my flatmates.

Bunnyslippers- There weren’t very many kittens left (FIFTEEN had already been adopted by the time we got there!), which helped to narrow things down—and then I asked one of the women who fosters kittens to help me choose one that would be good with lots of children and noise, plus 2 other cats. We tried out the ones she recommended, and this was the definite favorite: she hopped onto Elizabeth’s lap and started dozing off!

Awww…so jealous! I want a little kitten too.

I had one that purred so loud, I nearly named him Maytag because he sounded like our washer.

Names: Either Chaplin (or something related to him) because of the little mustache.

    OR

Something related to the adorable black hairdo blob: Marcel or Bob or something derived from that.

I’m trying to name yours, because our 2 would never welcome a 3rd.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a more wonderful way to spend a morning. Or an afternoon. Or any time of day, really.

    Love your party favor!!

(By the way, just out of curiosity, I looked up “party” [as in, “party favor”] at Behind the Name to see if I could come up with a fabulous name suggestion. Only one name had “party” in the description, and it wasn’t even the right kind of party. If you must know, it was the Nazi party and the name was Adolf.)

(Please don’t name your kitten Adolf.)

KITTY!!! She looks EXACTLY like the cat we adopted in almost the same accidental manner from a church fair when I was in 6th grade…and is still alive and going strong(ish…besides the kitty prozac). Her name is Alexandra, Lexi for short, because all our cats had queen names.

    A) Kitten shower sounds so fun, I would love to go.

B)I want a kitten, but apparently will have to wait until one of ours dies. I am so jealous.

Have you ever noticed how much a pet can add to the number of regular comments you get on a blog! I heard once if you want to make sure your YouTube video gets seen, just put cute kitten in the title – it automatically gets you thousands of hits.

Anyway – as someone who adopted two pre-named cats last year, I’d like to offer some names:

For purring (think motor) how about Harley? like the motorcycle?

For black and white (think piano) how about Stein (like Steinway) or Baldwin.

For just plain cute (and being third cat) how about Junior, BK (baby kitty), or Tres (pronounced Tray)?

Plus there are some great names for Black and White (Tuxedo) cats here:

I saw a card today that said something about the greatest natural resource being free kittens and I immediately thought of you!

I hope all is going well with the new one.
