Crappy Day Presents

Yesterday I had a crappy day. I didn’t write about it here because meh. But it was crappy, and YES as a matter of fact it DID turn out to be partly PMS, and PERHAPS YOU SHOULD NOT ASK SUCH NOSY QUESTIONS, GEEZ.

ANYWAY. Lucky for me I had in my possession a heap of Crappy Day Presents from Rachel, AKA Doing My Best. This is such a great idea: she and her friends send these to each other, not to be opened right away but rather to be held for a crappy day when such a thing is most needed. Not only does the recipient then get a well-timed gift, she can look look forward to it the entire time BEFORE she needs it. And then when there IS a crappy day, the feeling is not just “ACK, CRAPPY” but also “But this means I get a PRESENT.”

I love this. Rachel sent me a sampler of FIVE Crappy Day presents so I could try this out over time, and she labeled them with how severe of a crappy day should be matched with each gift. Here’s Rachel’s key:

Minor—“Life certainly can be blah!”
Moderate—“Why is everyone around me *SO* IRRITATING?!”
MAJOR—“If people don’t *WATCH OUT*, HEADS MAY ROLL!!!!”

And yesterday I went straight for a Major. Look what was inside:

A two-layer tin of chocolates, and a little card containing kind words.
Foreground: the label that was on the outside of the package.

Would you like a closer look at those chocolates? I’ll bet you would, you naughty wench.

Those are See’s Chocolates, mostly MY FAVORITES (Butterscotch Squares) but with some Polar Bear Paws thrown in for variety and the fun of trying something new (and they are REALLY GOOD: peanuts and caramel and white chocolate and cute name).

So! I can now give first-person testimony that this is a great idea, especially if you ALREADY like sending impulsive little presents to friends.

So fantastic. I want to do this now.

Also, I want a sample of those Polar Bear Paws because they sound like everything good in this world.

Glad your day got a little brighter!

Oh, I love this. Care packages are my favorite things in the world, and this is such a good idea for them. ESPECIALLY since I have just discovered the WONDER that is the Target clearance shelves. Now I know what I can do with all those sale items “I” don’t really need.

Doing My Best– They’re PERFECT. The little white spots are bits of white chocolate that got onto the others, which somehow I managed not to notice before taking the picture! And I’ve eaten one Polar Bear Paw and two Butterscotch Squares, and they are PERFECT.

Genius! I would have opened a severe one today for sure. It may or may not have something to do with PMS but that is beside the point. I am going to start sending these to people!

Oh, thank you for sharing this idea! I have already stolen this idea and am making something tonight. Yay!

When I was in university, my friend and I gave each other a “bag o’ shit” every so often. We had nothing, so it was random crap but it made us laugh and we loved it. Reminds me of that.

Sorry you had a crappy day. The Crappy-Day Gift is such a great idea! I love it. And, oh, how I miss See’s candy. We don’t have them out here. I have to get my fix whenever I go back to California for a visit. Buying online just wouldn’t be the same as being greeted with a sample and the wonderful smell, just for walking in the door.

I hope tomorrow is a vast improvement.

Nicole- Great idea! I’ll do that! Rachel also sent me a whole bunch of different pretty cupcake papers, which was SO FUN since I can definitely use them and would never have bought them for myself, and also just because it was such a great gift idea and something I’d never thought of!

This inspires me to send my friend L a little ‘pick-me-up’ package or maybe a gift card. Because she is in the first year of the same crazy intense nursing program I’m in (I’m finishing up– almost done with the 3rd yr) and it is really rough. I’ve been sending here little “you can do it!” “you’re a rock star!” etc text messages but gifties sound even better. It’s so NICE to see that somebody cares and knows the things you might like.
