May I recommend a hat for all your hat-related needs? I was shopping for winter hats for my fifth grader and my third grader, because the fifth grader EVIDENTLY no longer wants to wear the multicolored ones with fleecy spikes and tassels I’m so fond of, and so of course the copycat third grader had to pipe up with the same opinion. We went to Target and we looked in the boys’ section, but those hats failed to please the judges, and also even the size 8-14 was pretty snug (pediatrician, examining Henry: “Have ALL your kids had such ENORMOUS HEADS?”). We went over to the men’s section to see if those would be too big, and they weren’t. But they were, like, $12.99, and I hate paying that much for a non-cute hat that will no doubt be lost in November. Then we saw these:

The hats are $2.99 each, and they’re stretchy and fit EVERYBODY, from fifth-grade Rob down to 2-year-old Henry. I bought six: one for each kid, plus a spare to reduce the morning fighting over who gets which color (everyone will get a choice, rather than the last hat-chooser getting stuck with the last hat). It comes in wine red, orange, yellow, green, royal blue, plum, black, grey, and brown. I still want to buy the brown one, and the kids might talk me into getting wine red and black too. At one of our local Targets these hats were on the opposite side of the display rack that held the more expensive men’s hats; at another Target the hats were on a different rack altogether (but still in the men’s department).
We had those same hats when I was a kid! It makes me sad that my kids will not want to wear their cute hats someday! I love hats.
They also have those stretchy gloves that fit everyone at something like a $1 for 2 pairs. They came in black and perhaps navy as well. That way I don’t freak out when they lose them. I also bought several sets all in black so, you know, easy to match.

I have kids with enormous heads, too. Adult size bike helmets at age three. Hats are always problematic.
I too have a giant head child. He wears a size 7 1/4 hat at age 9. My other two have normal heads, of course, big head had to be born first…ouch. Anyhoo! Thanks for the info, and I too will buy as many colors as they have to reduce the “I didn’t get the one I wanted” drama :)
I love cute hats! I experiment on my son with my knitting. I usually make the first one too big, but he (at 3 years old) also has an “Enormous Head” so it works. Otherwise we buy men’s dept. hats for him too. For now the teddy bear one with ears I knitted for him, he loves. ;) Or the one with tassles on the sides. :D (I’m not ready to think about him outgrowing that yet.)
Cool– they look good and they are practical! You made a good find. My son, who’s now grown, was never in his life able to wear any of the one-size-fits-all hats. We used to call them one-size-fits-all-but-Rob hats.

How oh how did you get a photo with all five hats in it and without any compelling reason to delete the photo? It makes me want to go out and buy the hats in every color just for myself!
My kids have giant heads too! I love these hats. And I love that you bought one extra so everyone has a choice. I will need to remember that trick.
You know, there were a lot of big families in the town where I grew up. The general adage was, “First up, best dressed.” You are defying the cliches with your planning ahead and all.
Totally off topic: I just signed up for Post Crossing and I am SO excited. I found some new, unused postcards in my scrapbooking stuff that I am going to send out!!! SQUEEE!! Thank you for enlightening me.
I happened upon these tonight and they were $1…not on sale, that was the regular price. So I got 3 for back-up and/or donations this winter. I always start the season with 2 packs of the 2-for-$1 stretchy mittens which aren’t good for snow play but perfect for everything else.
I love these hats and I love hearing about your finds in Target. Our equivlent is Tesco, I think. My town recently opened up a huge store that opens 24hrs. This is amazing to us, we can’t get over ourselves, people are going mad in competition with each other about their bargains fom Tesco and sure I could go on all day talking about shopping without the kids late at night!!

My three youngest will still wear the multi-colored tasseled hats, but I’m sure I’ll be looking for more understated hats in the future. Good to know they’re out there cheap! Also, big heads hold lots of brains! ;)
I grew up in Northern Michigan and we refer to these hats as “chooks”. They are very popular and warm. Your kids would fit right in!

H&M has good hats, too, in the men’s section. You kind of have to look for them, but then they are $5 not on sale and are totally rad. Also stretchy.
