Our Favorite Baby Names Starting with C

Here is the game we are playing:

We are going to pretend that we are naming a baby and that the name MUST start with a certain letter, and so we will need one name starting with that letter for a boy and one name starting with that letter for a girl, or else one name that would work for either, EVEN IF we don’t like any of the names that start with that letter enough to Actually In Real Life choose them. It is just a game where we place artificial restrictions on reality in order to create the kind of tension that makes games fun—like when you have to choose what foods you’d eat if you could only eat three foods for the rest of your life: the fun is in thinking it over AS IF it were a real forced decision, while KNOWING it is not. There is a baby! It MUST be given a name with a particular letter! That is the game.

After that basic concept, we can decide our own sub-rules, based on what makes the game fun and not stressful. Some examples:

• I’m not planning to play that the name has to fit with the names of my other children or with the surname, though this would be an option for anyone who would LIKE to play it that way; I think I will have more fun if I pretend it is a stand-alone baby and that the surname is not an issue, though I may change my mind as we go. (And if I narrow it down to a few options and can’t decide, I might use siblings/surname as a tie-breaker.)

• It is also fine to narrow it down to a few finalists without getting to The One Name.

• The boy name and girl name don’t have to work TOGETHER: we are only naming ONE baby, so you’d only use one or the other. But you MAY play that the names have to work together, if that’s more fun.

• It is fine to wave aside issues such as a friend who already used that name, a famous person with the name, etc., if that makes it more fun and less stressful to choose. This is just pretend, so you can pretend that those things aren’t issues if you want to. (Or you can let the issues stand as they are in real life, if THAT is more fun.)

• We can also all make our own decisions about whether the names have to be ones we think we’d ACTUALLY USE in that hypothetical scenario, or just our FAVORITE names starting with that letter, regardless of whether we think the names are practical; I am not sure which way I will play it, and I likely won’t be consistent.

• If you already have a child with a name starting with the letter we’re working on, you get to pick again from all the names that remain; you don’t have to choose your child’s name as your favorite just because it WAS your favorite: this is a FRESH baby, and you wouldn’t give it the same name as your existing child. (If you would normally prefer not to repeat an initial within a sibling group, you can just pretend that’s NOT a preference for the sake of the game.)

• You can do as much or as little explanation as you like in your comment: you can just list the names you chose, or you can explain your process/preferences/reasoning/runners-up, or whatever is most fun.

Today’s letter is C. For girls I already have Celeste, Claire, Clara, Clarissa, and Cordelia on my list. I also like Catherine and Cecily and Cora. I like the sound of Charity and Clarity. I love the name Claudia, but it’s the name of Paul’s ex. I didn’t realize how many girl C names I liked until this post. If I’d had to choose a C name when I was actually naming my actual girl, I think we would have chosen Clarissa. Naming one now, and with the idea that we can ignore things that would be complications in real life, I think I’d like to choose Claudia.

For boys, I already have Charles and Calvin on my list. I also like Caleb. I like Clarence because of a book; I’m hoping to see it come back soon, along with Laurence and Florence and so forth. I choose Charles, called Charlie: that was one of our finalists for Henry, and I’m not excited about it, but I still like it and feel like it’s a good solid choice, and that’s all I ask of my boy-name list candidates.

Now you! If you want to! Only if it’s fun and not stressful! Feel free to adjust the game-play to be fun and not stressful!

For a girl, Clare. That’s always been my top choice, even though I do think it would be fun to entertain some other choices. Claudia was one of the names my great aunt Clara wished she’d been named, so I do have a fondness for that. I love Cora, Catherine, Carmen and Campbell. But Clare would be the final pick.

For a boy, I would choose Charles.

    TLDR: Cora, Cedar
I have always liked the name Cora. It was on my list when I was still having babies. Cordelia is a great name, although King Lear did seriously rule it out. I like Chloe, Cedar, and Carys as well. With these options, I think I choose Cora, although I am seriously tempted by Cedar.

Maybe I choose Cedar for my boy name? Yes, I do choose that.

Callum and Clara, I think. I also love Calvin and Cora/Corinna/Catherine

I don’t think my C list is very long!

I am a fan of the new on the scene Cove, for either sex, and I love Charlie whenever I hear it, for either sex!

I don’t think I would use it, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Caroline (only pronounced -line rather than lynn) NN Caro. So that will be my girl pick.

Boy…I currently have Caspar on my list so let’s go with that one! I think the ghost association is fading…but a reboot could change everything!

C is interesting. I like a lot of C names but don’t LOVE a lot of C names. For girls I like Clara and Calliope and Charlie. For boys, I’ve always loved Calvin (my original pick for my first boy). I also like Cosmo. I was delighted to learn my granddaughter’s 1/2 brother is to be named Cosmo this summer. Can you even imagine meeting a little Cosmo??

I think for final choices I shall choose, Calliope (Calli for short) and Calvin.

I have a Cora and would choose it again :) When I was in middle school, I loved Caleb, Cameron, and Colin.

I also love Celeste, Celine, and Celia, and like Colette, the Cass- family (Cassie, Cassia, Cassandra, Cassidy), and Catherine. For boys, Cedar, Callahan/Callum/Calvin, Cormac, and Conrad are also nice. Soft spot for the old-man-porch-sitter options of Claude and Clyde.

Casey has always struck me as the most lovely, usable gender-neutral name going.

Leaving my Cora aside, I’m going to go with Claire and Caleb.

Initially I couldn’t think of anything for girls except for Cassandra. But I don’t like Cassie as a nn. Then I facepalmed because I have a C middle name which I love! Carmina :) Then I remembered that if our second child had been a girl we were gonna go with Ciara.

Recently, I’ve been listening to a podcast and a character is named Ceylon which I think would be great on any gender.

Finally, boy is easy – Caleb!

My second daughter was almost Clementine because we thought another song name would be a sweet pattern, but then we realized family friends had a Clementine. We’ve always been no repeats. When I was having an ultrasound the name Cleo randomly popped into my head, but my husband dismissed it as ‘too tarot card reader.’ I kinda wished I’d pushed more. I told my daughter this story and now she calls herself Cleo sometimes “Cleo, middle name Patra!” LOL. Love Callista, Caroline, Catherine on other kids. We know a sweet toddler Cedar, an awesome tween Cassidy, and I’ve always loved that our friends used Cate (that particular spelling, which I always hear differently than Kate.) My 5yo’s BFFs are all Cs – Chloe, Clara, Colby (w a twin bro C@mden.)

Boys are harder. Conrad is a family name, so it might be a contender. I like Clive, Clark, Colm, Crosby, Caspian. We know a boy Cypress. Cosmo mentioned here is awesome!

    B: Conrad

Like @dash above, I really like Casey for a boy or a girl. Unisex names aren’t usually my style, but I could definitely be talked into Casey!

I like a lot of C names for boys. Charles (nn Charlie or Chuck) is a classic, and I also like Christian, Connor, and Cyrus. But I think my top choice would be Caleb; I like the full name and the nickname Cal.

Caroline (pronounced with a long i) for a girl, possibly nicknamed Caro or Carrie or no nickname at all. I like Carrie Ann as a nn for Caroline Anna. I thought of this name when I was a teenager and continue to like it, but never used it. Catherine, nicknamed Cate is a close second.

Christopher nn Topher for a boy. I have a soft spot for it because it would have been my name if I’d been a boy.

Catherine for a girl, definitely! But I also really love Charlotte (kinda rhymes with my name, Margaret), Cecilia, Chloe, and Calliope (too unusual for me to use as a first).

For a boy, I love Casper and Crispin, both which may also be too unusual for my taste for a first name, but I love them so much I might not even care? I’d probably go with Casper between them, but if I decided to go with a “safer” choice, my pick would be Christopher.

I like Cecily, Cecilia, Camilla and Chloe. I also like Caroline and Clementine (both with the long-i sound). But Claire is the one that has my heart. it was on our short list for both kids.

For boys, I was initially stumped, not able to think of a single C name I’d choose. Caleb, Charlie, Collin, Carter, Christopher, Clayton, Cameron etc are all… fine. Non-offensive if a bit tired, to me. So, for the sake of the game I went digging and found Corbin, Clarke, Crew and Cruz. I think I’ll pick Cruz.

For girls, Catherine and Cecilia were on our long list for baby names when my daughter was in utero. I also love Charlotte, but had a friend with that name and it would have felt weird to use it for my baby. I really like the name Courtney. Since I was a kid, I’ve loved Cassandra.

So for a girl, I would go with Cassandra. No, Carmen. No, Cassandra.

The first name to ever be on my Baby Name list was Charlotte, way back in 1999 (my senior year in high school). It turns out that a LOT of people in my generation also love the name, including some English royals. And I didn’t end up having kids, so the popularity of the name ended up being non-issue.

I have a foster daughter named Charri, which I think is beautiful and unique. We’ve only met one other person with her name and it was spelled differently.

For boys, I like Charles and Callum and I feel like Cedric is due for a comeback. However, Kelvin was actually on our boy list, and though we ultimately soured on it for various reasons, and I quietly pivoted to preferring Calvin and would probably have lobbied hard for it had we ever had a boy. So that seems like a slam dunk.

For girls, so many good C names and none that float to the top. I think a big issue for me is that because there ARE so many good C names, they’ve been quite popular, both in real life and in popular culture, and it’s impossible for me to find one without some association. Not all of those associations are bad, of course, but it makes me pause every time I find a name I like and rethink it. Cordelia is a great example – it brings to mind both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Anne of Green Gables, neither of which are bad associations in any way. But they’re really strong associations, and I can’t imagine actually using the name. Caroline was my mom’s second choice name for me, and I went through a stretch of wishing she’d given me that name instead because I loved the nickname Carly (my mom would have called me Carrie). But as an adult, I know at least two Carolines, including my SIL, so it feels like the wrong era for it now. Others I like include Cassandra, Charlotte, Carys, Clementine, Constance, and Claudia. One of my actual daughters already has a Latin name, so I’ll eliminate Claudia as being too matchy, and then Charlotte as too popular, Carys as outside my naming style comfort zone, and Constance because I don’t care for the nickname Connie. Which leaves Cassandra (classic and timeless!) and Clementine (vintage yet spunky!). I will go with vintage yet spunky.

    Clementine and Calvin

I have recently liked Cora, which I think is adorable, and Cassandra and Clarissa are also favorites of mine. I think Catherine or Caroline would be something I would actually use in real life (and I do adore them), but for puposes of this exercise, I choose Cora!

For boys, there is really only one name: Charles. I love this name. It is my grandfather’s and great-grandfather’s name, and it just has a really nice sound to it. It is also classic and strong, with the sweet nickname option of Charlie.

In real life, I’d probably pick Cecily, but in a fantasy space like this the winner is definitely Corisande. I love it so much. Unfortunately, I love it with a French accent and a rolled “r,” so I don’t think I’d like how other people would say it. Cory is fun though, so I might let my heart talk me into it.

Again in fantasy-land, my spouse and I love Cairn for a boy (or a child without an assigned gender), but it sounds so close to Karen I don’t know if I’d dare. Corin and Corbin both appeal as well.

I have a sister named Karin (Car-in), so I guess my brain is a little stuck on variously embellished C/k-r-n progressions—I even have a soft spot for Coriander though I’d never use it for a real child. Maybe for a pet or a character.

I kind of don’t like the letter “c” as a general rule. The only sound that belongs to “c” alone is the “ch” sound in “chair” even though it is used to spell at least four different sounds. I like the hard “k” sound in many names, but if it makes sense to spell them with a “k” because they are spelled that way in another language or because they can be transliterated that way from a language with a different alphabet, then I prefer to choose the name spelled with a “k.” For example, I love Constantine for a boy but might go with the transliterated-from-Russian Konstantin instead. And for names with multiple accepted English variants like Catherine/Katherine, I would choose the “k” spelling again.

There are also some problems with choices I would otherwise love. Claude, Claudia, and Clara would all be problematic choices because of family members. Cora is also on the family tree and would not be a problematic choice based on the person, but unfortunately the name makes me think of a male junior high bully called Cory and a former stepmother called Corinne, pronounced with the stress on the long “o” in the first syllable and a long “e” sound in the second syllable. Those two people plus coronavirus have ruined most names starting with “cor-” for me, including Coralie, Coraline, Corinna, and Cordelia. I also couldn’t use the names Cara or Celina due to people I know with those names, though for some reason I do prefer the “c” spelling of the latter name over the “s” spelling.

There are a lot of lovely “c” names, nevertheless. Girl names starting with “c:” that I like on other people’s children include Calypso, Calliope, Calla, Cecily, Cecilia, Charlotte, Caroline, Colleen, Cosette, Cassandra, Chloe, Cleo, Claire, Clarissa, Clarice (British pronunciation), Cressida, Crescencia, and Callisto/Callista. The names that I would be most likely to choose myself are Cosima and Clea (rhymes with Leia) or Cleodora. But since those all come from Greek, I still kind of want to transliterate them with a “k!”

I had a kitten named Cosmo nicknamed Ozzie that I wasn’t able to keep for long (thank you, Chinese bureaucracy), and I think I’d be ready to use it for a boy or maybe Cosimo (if I didn’t have a Cosima), though it doesn’t shorten to Ozzie as well. I love Cole and kept trying to find a longer form that would work for my son (Coleridge, Colebrook, Coleson, Coltrane, Colwin, etc.), but ultimately, that just wasn’t his name. Boy names that I love for other people’s children include Cord/Chord, Cade, Calvin, Callahan, Caleb, Colm, Colin, Cassius, Cassian, Caspian, Caspar, Casimir, Crispin, Crosby, Curtis, Clayton called Clay, Chester, and Clyde. If I didn’t choose Constantine or Cosmo for my own boy because of my preference for the letter “k,” because of pop culture associations, or because maybe they’re just too much, then I would go with either Callum or Calder, probably the latter.

My children all have a C name. It didn’t start out that way, but after the first two were named -just because we liked the names, not trying to match, my husband wanted to keep it going. (We have two girls and two boys).

Girls’ names are easy for me: Claire, Caroline, Callie, Camille, Colleen, Charlotte, Claudia, Catherine

Boys’ names weren’t as easy: Cole, Clay, Craig. I wish I had used Conrad for my younger son.

Clarence is my dad’s name and both of my grandfathers’ names, but I just couldn’t use it. I have never liked it. My Claire and Clay were named for them as honor names.

For a girl I’d choose Camille. It has a different ending from my other two girls’ names, which is a plus for me. I’ve always liked it and considered it as a middle name for my second child.
For a boy I love Calvin but unfortunately it just doesn’t work remotely with my last name (it sounds way too much like “calendar”). Instead I’d use Conrad, which I also really like!

I like Camille (but more as middle name), Claire, Claudia, Calliope nn Callie.
I don’t love a lot of C boys’ names. Cairo is cool but I’d feel weird using it as a white person. Cody, Cedar, or Cypress could work for any gender. I like Calvin.

I’ll go with Calvin and Cedar.
