Baby Boy Werkmen, Brother to Dane and Owen

Dear Swistle,

This is our 3rd boy and we’re having a hard time coming up with names that we love and that sound good with our other boys’ names.

We prefer shorter first names, and pick a middle name that is a Saint’s name, since we’re Catholic.

Our last name is something similar to Werkmen. Our current top two are Colby Blaise and Cole Alexander.

While I like Cole Alexander, it’s almost too preppy for me. Our other kids are Dane Patrick and Owen Zachary and they seem a tad more “hip” than a Cole. I also have a “thing” about choosing names in the SS lists top 50, though Owen was very close to the top 50 last year. Cole is around 70 I think, but I get antsy in the top 100. (not that that’s all that important…)

We’re up for suggestions as well.

Devan

You like shorter names. Here are some more short-‘n’-sweeties, with their 2006 SSA popularity rankings (the month of May cannot come soon enough for those of us wanting the 2007 figures) and the way they’d sound with the other boys’ names:

Cade Werkmen (#288) (Dane, Owen, Cade)
Gage Werkmen (#156) (Dane, Owen, Gage)
Grant Werkmen (#155) (Dane, Owen, Grant)
Heath Werkmen (#786) (Dane, Owen, Heath)
Leo Werkmen (#236) (Dane, Owen, Leo)
Milo Werkmen (#679) (Dane, Owen, Milo)
Reid Werkmen (#422) (Dane, Owen, Reid)

My sibling-group favorites from that list are Cade, Gage, and Reid, but I give Reid the edge for having a different sound: Cade and Gage have the same long-A sound as Dane, and might be too similar.

Reid doesn’t work with the middle name Alexander if you’re avoiding monogram words: the initials would be RAW. I went to Catholic.org for more saint names (and it is very funny indeed to see ads like “Who’s Got a Crush on YOU??? Click here to find out!!!” on a website like this). The list of saints is way, way, WAY too long to browse through, but if you can search to see if a name is a saint’s name or not. I like Reid Elias Werkmen (REW), Reid Matthias Werkmen (RMW), Reid Sebastian Werkman (RSW), and Reid Xavier Werkmen (RXW).

But Reid is kind of…preppy, right? So I’m going back to the list to re-choose favorites. This time I choose Heath, Leo, and Milo. They’re different enough from your current children’s names; they’re more hip than prep; and I had two of the three on the finalist list for my own baby. The name Heath has extra poignancy because of Heath Ledger’s recent death.

I like Heath Elias Werkmen (HEW), Leo Sebastian Werkmen (LSW), and Milo Xavier Werkmen (MXW).

Name update: “We went with Cade Alexander. :) Thanks!”

    Cole Sebastian

    or

    Miles Alexander

I also really like your original choice of Cole Alexander. I don’t think it’s too preppy- I think it is hip and matches your other sons names well (short first name, hard consonant longer middle name.)

    Congratulations!

Well, Devan, you already know I love Cole Alexander and I’ve been pulling for it since you brought it up before. I don’t think it sounds preppy at all.

But here are a few others from the lists Swistle and Jess made up that I like.
Gage (maybe Gage Matthias), Chase Alan, or Grant Alan. Those are all nice.

You know how I feel about Cade. I really do like Blake and Miles as first names and Matthias and Sebastien as middle names. I really do like Cole though. Maybe it is the middle name that needs tweaked a bit?

And, just because I think it might something you would want to consider, when I hear Colby Blaise, I hear “Flaming Cheese”.

Misty, OMG i had to pick myself up off the floor from “flaming cheese!” lol
That is our primary annoyance with Colby, somebody always gets reminded of cheese. Cade is getting nearer the top of our list, but Cole is also still up there.
We do have some more we are considering at the moment.
    What about Seth? Adam?

I like Miles/Milo and Leo for first names. I like both of the middle names you mentioned in your email to swistle…

I can’t wait to see this little guy and hear his name!

I think “Grant” is perfect with Dane and Owen. “Dane” seems quite modern and trendy, and “Owen,” while being popular, is more solid and old-fashioned to my ear. “Grant” has some substance to it but also has that breezy, one-syllable coolness of “Dane.” In my opinion it ties the first two names together.

For the middle name, a longer, classic name seems right to coordinate with the older brothers. “Grant Alexander” flows nicely. (DAW is almost a word, but I think it’s fine.)

Love, love, LOVE the name Cole. Cole Sebastian or Cole Oliver. Although if the last name really does start with W I would definitely go with Sebastian, for obvious reasons initial-wise.

Well, I do like the name Cole and I think it’s in the “cool” category. I like short first names too, so I had lots on my list. Here are some I like that go well with Dane and Owen:

    Chad
    Quinn
    Luke
    Kael
    Rhys

I like Alexander as a middle name, but also Sebastian.

Well, of the names you’ve chosen, devan, I like Colby Alexander best.

As for the other possibilities, I puffy heart Chase Sebastian. In fact, if I decide I’m crazy enough to have one more and it’s a boy, I may just use that name myself.

I think Heath is a perfect fit with the siblings. The vowel sounds are all long and the names are a similar style. I can just see them all grown up together with their names in a caption underneath. “Dane, Owen, and Heath”. I think any of the longer middle names will do well with it.

I, too, like Cole Alexander. And I also think Grant sounds good with the other names.

(Of course I like Eli/Elias. I’m a bit sad to hear it’s climbing the charts, though.)

I’m in agreement with many here that Cole Alexander sounds good. My thought is less of a “too preppy” than a “a bit on the trendy side.” Also, after just browsing Jess’s list of first and middle names, I came up with Grant Oliver before I saw it in her list of favorites. I think it has a great sound, goes well with the last name and the brothers’ names and grows well from baby to man.

I really like Cole Alexander. I also love Eli. Can I suggest Eli Mason? I think it sounds nice—I love Eli but hub nixxed it. We’re having a girl anyway, so who cares.

I can’t wait to hear what you decide!!

Wait, why did the name Drew get overlooked? (from the wizard siblings section) Can that be back in the running?
I love the name Drew, and I think it works well with Alexander, but I see two problems with it:
    1) people will lengthen it to Andrew
    2) If Devan is your real name, and your husband is also a D-name, then Owen might feel a bit miffed.

RE: Seth and Adam, I think Seth works great with Dane and Owen, and even Alexander. IAs far as Adam, would have been an Adam had I been a boy, so I have a special affection for it. But I don’t think it works with Alexander, and it’s kind of tame compared to Dane and Owen.
So I vote for Seth or Drew.

Also, I’m not a big fan of the name Eli, even though my cousin just used it as a middle name. (Lincoln Eli. Thoughts?)

psst: Catholic.org isn’t “the Catholic Church’s website”, it’s just run by an independent Catholic media group. It’d be like saying a political blog represents the Federal Government.

I quite like Cole and Grant. I also really like the sound of Heath with the sibling group, but feel it may end up sounding kind of 2008-date-stamped due to Mr. Ledger’s death.

THanks for all the comments. A few comments of my own:
All of our names, minus Owen, do indeed start with “D” so we’ve decided that all further d names are off the table. Too bad, because I do like Drew a lot.
I’ll have to run Heath by Dh, he’s already nixed Tate, Reid and Miles. (he’s very difficult.)
Seth and Cade are both starting to rise to the top of my list, Cole is still up there and while I really REALLY like Eli, dh insists ppl will think only of Eli Manning, who is apparently from somewhere near where we live. ugh.

you’ll probably want to stay away from Eli & Heath as they’ll be popular this year (names with heavy press trend upward).
    i really like 1)Gage 2)Grant 3)Reid/Reed
what about Gene? (i can’t support Oliver because that’s the name i’ve been holding onto forever and i hate for people to up it’s popularity too much before i get to use it)

I say Cole Oliver! Except I JUST realized that his initials would be COW. Dang it! Cole Alexander then! I love the name Cole, but I want to spell it as Kohl. :)

Am I the only person who remembers that the zombie demon kid from Pet Sematary was named Gage?

It’s right up there with Damien (from The Omen) for me. I couldn’t do either one.

I think Cole fits in nicely with your other boys’ names.

I agree that Eli and Heath will be getting increasingly popular. We like Eli, but we already have one Manning brother name in our family.

It’s so hard to pick a name! YIKES!
My vote is in for Seth! What a great name, I’m not sure if it was on your list but someone mentioned it. Our name we never got to use was Simon:( No simon’s for us as baby #3 was our girl:) (and so was 4)

Good luck and congratulations. My hubby nixed a bunch of my favs too – silly hubby!

I think Eli is bigger than it looks in the stats, and I think a lot of people like it, so it could get big fast.

I like Milo as a first name and I also like Cole Sebastian.

I prefer “Cade”. Very cool name choice.

I like Cade Thomas as someone suggest. Cade Sebastian is nice, I like the way the d and Cade and the b in Sebastian sort of compliment each other when you look at them typed side by side.

“Cade Sebastian” (once more for your easy viewing pleasure).

I also like Swistle’s suggestion that you use Callum. LOL. Also an awesome name.
