Baby Boy Alweiss, Brother to Dylan and Ronan

Hey Swistle!

I am going to have my third baby boy in October. Our last name is Alweiss (rhymes will all-ice). His older brothers are Dylan Ryker and Ronan Hunter. So we kind of have a subtle Celtic theme going on. I have a list of names I’m digging- but haven’t committed to any of them. My husband likes Carver and I do not. I like the name Quinn as a middle name but it depends on the first name, if it flows or not. So, Quinn isn’t an absolute. This is my list thus far:

Crew
Raven
Harlan
Madden
Knox
Lyric
Killian
Soren
Denver
Jericho (nickname Echo)
Kylo
Hayes
Phoenix Quinn

I love Hayes as a potential middle name but it’s my cousin’s husband’s last name and I’m not sure if that’s a weird choice.

What name (doesn’t have to come from my list) do you think sounds best with Dylan and Ronan? They commonly go by “Dilly and Ro” too. I need help desperately!

I think your husband’s favored name Carver goes well with Ryker and Hunter and could be offered as the middle-name pick in exchange for you having more say with the first name. Unless Alweiss is your husband’s family’s surname, in which case you should already have more say.

I think it does not matter if Hayes is your cousin’s husband’s surname, especially if you’re only considering it as a middle name, but even if you’re considering it as a first name. If anyone says anything (and how many people in your life would know the connection?), you say “Yes, isn’t that a funny coincidence??”

I notice the first two boys’ names both have -an endings, and that you have a lot of -en/-an names on your list. Is this something you want to keep going, or something you’d prefer to avoid?

Kylo has such an undiluted negative association, I would not use it, despite it falling beautifully into the intersection of fresh naming trends. Really, it is the fault of Star Wars for using such a perfectly trend-capturing name as the name of a villain. It reminds me of when a pharmaceutical company used the name Allegra, when they could have used Fexochlor or some other name that no one would want to use for a baby.

Raven, Lyric, Jericho/Echo, and Phoenix all feel like style leaps to me after Dylan and Ronan. They’d make fun middle names.

My own favorite from the list for this sibling group is Soren. Soren Alweiss; Dylan, Ronan, Soren. Other names I might expect to see if I got a birth announcement in the mail include Harlan, Madden, and:

Archer
Ashton
Beckett
Brannigan
Brecken
Bridger
Brighton
Broderick
Callan
Camden
Carson
Carter
Coleman
Colton
Crawford
Crosby
Cullen
Finian
Gage
Grayson
Griffin
Hudson
Keaton
Keegan
Kellan
Keller
Kieran
Landon
Logan
Maxon
Morgan
Porter
Quincy
Sawyer
Sullivan
Teagan
Teague
Tyson
Warner
Weston
Wilder
Wyatt

What about Calder? It’s similar to Carver and has a Scottish origins. Calder Quinn Alweiss, nn Cal.

Otherwise, Soren, Logan, and Kieran are my faves.

I agree that Soren from your list fits best with the siblings. I also like Harlan, which seems a bit more old fashioned but still fits. (I’m influenced by the Umbrella Academy by my like for Harlan and by seeing it as a bit old fashioned.)
If you want to get away from the “ends in -an” theme, I was surprised by how much I like Crew with the sibset. Dylan, Ronan, and Crew sounds great together.

I wonder how you’d feel about Cormac? Celtic and unique, sounds great with your other sons:

    Dylan, Ronan and Cormac

    Cormac Quinn nn Mac

Or maybe Malcolm? Malcolm Carver? nn Mal or no nn

    Best of luck!

Same here! My first thought was Cormac. Man, that works well with this sib-set in addition to just being a great name.

Agree that Cormac is a great option.

Cillian from your list goes beautifully with the brother names, while introducing a nice new rhythm.

Cian is another you might like.

Senan is becoming popular in Ireland and has some similar qualities to Ronan – travels easily, is pronounced as it says on the tin (SEN-an). Might be a bit too matchy.

I love Raven for a boy – but it’s close to Ronan. How about a middle name ? Continuing your Celtic theme..

    Cassidy Raven
    Beckett Raven
    Finley Raven

Or what about Killian Hayes ? Teagan Hayes ?

I love Dylan and Ronan! I am shocked that no one has suggested Callum, Lachlan, or Graham! Full disclosure, the first two I gave to my own sons and the last is a nephew. So I know they’re wearable! Callum Alweiss might actually be too sing-songy, but Graham Carver Alweiss would be super sturdy and Lachlan Quinn Alweiss pretty sharp too!

I was drawn to Soren, too. It seems like a good fit. I want to like Killian, but I can’t get past the first syllable being kill. Would you consider Quinn as a first name? I was all set to suggest Declan, but then I realized it has the same beginning and end sounds as Dylan and that might be too much.

    From your list I like:
    Crew
    Soren
    Hayes

    From Swistle’s list I like:
    Crosby (Cro or Crow)
    Griffin (Finn)
    Kellan (Kell)

    From others’ suggestions I like:
    Calder (Cal)
    Cormac (Mac)
    Declan (Dec or Deke)
    Malcolm (Mac)
Quinn as a first name (Q)

    I also like:
    Eamon (Ames)
Conall or Conor (spelled with one n is usually the Gaelic way for a first name)
    Dexter (Dex)
    Kirby (Kirb)
Seamus (Shea) Unfortunately I can also think of some teasing sorts of nns for Seamus. : /

    Best wishes to you!

Love Cormac in this set! Or Madden from your list. How about Kirwin? Or Quincy? I do like the pattern of -er names in the middle, so I agree Carver seems great there.

Soren strikes me as very Scandinavian…so it wouldn’t be my choice if you want to continue the subtly Celtic theme.

I like Callum a lot, as was suggested above. Also, I think Hayes would be a great first name! The cousin thing doesn’t seem like a big deal to me.

What about Quinlan? It’s Irish, and gives the option of Quinn as a nickname.

From your list I like Soren best. The Soren I knew had a brother named Cian (KEE-en), which I like with Dylan and Ronan as well. I also like the Kian spelling.

I like the suggestions of Cormac, Conall and Cillian/Killian from your list.

    Dylan and Ronan and…
Alistair/Alastar. Alistair Alweiss might be too much AL but it also might sound awesome? Dilly, Ro and Allie?
    Conley
    Corbin
    Crowe
    Finnegan
    Ian
    Owen
    Shamus

I second Owen or Shamus/Seamus. I also came to suggest Ethan as a potential choice: Dylan, Ronan, and Ethan are a nice sibset!

Maybe Quinn as the first name? Ends in -n, nice match with sibs but not overly Celtic. (Is it? I don’t think so)
But more for me, it’s tough in the middle with some of your favorites unless the double -n -n ending really appeals. Especially Harlan Quinn (harlequin). Soren Quinn? Killian Quinn?

Is there any reason why Quinn couldn’t be a first name? Because Quinn Carver feels perfect for you. Other than that I want to put forward Bishop – It’s slightly different from your current picks but has the same british preppy feel Ronan does.
