Our Favorite Baby Names Starting with G

Here is the game we are playing:

We are going to pretend that we are naming a baby and that the name MUST start with a certain letter, and so we will need one name starting with that letter for a boy and one name starting with that letter for a girl, or else one name that would work for either, EVEN IF we don’t like any of the names that start with that letter enough to Actually In Real Life choose them. It is just a game where we place artificial restrictions on reality in order to create the kind of tension that makes games fun—like when you have to choose what foods you’d eat if you could only eat three foods for the rest of your life: the fun is in thinking it over AS IF it were a real forced decision, while KNOWING it is not. There is a baby! It MUST be given a name with a particular letter! That is the game.

After that basic concept, we can decide our own sub-rules, based on what makes the game fun and not stressful. Some examples:

• I’m not planning to play that the name has to fit with the names of my other children or with the surname, though this would be an option for anyone who would LIKE to play it that way; I think I will have more fun if I pretend it is a stand-alone baby and that the surname is not an issue, though I may change my mind as we go. (And if I narrow it down to a few options and can’t decide, I might use siblings/surname as a tie-breaker.)

• It is also fine to narrow it down to a few finalists without getting to The One Name.

• The boy name and girl name don’t have to work TOGETHER: we are only naming ONE baby, so you’d only use one or the other. But you MAY play that the names have to work together, if that’s more fun.

• It is fine to wave aside issues such as a friend who already used that name, a famous person with the name, etc., if that makes it more fun and less stressful to choose. This is just pretend, so you can pretend that those things aren’t issues if you want to. (Or you can let the issues stand as they are in real life, if THAT is more fun.)

• We can also all make our own decisions about whether the names have to be ones we think we’d ACTUALLY USE in that hypothetical scenario, or just our FAVORITE names starting with that letter, regardless of whether we think the names are practical; I am not sure which way I will play it, and I likely won’t be consistent.

• If you already have a child with a name starting with the letter we’re working on, you get to pick again from all the names that remain; you don’t have to choose your child’s name as your favorite just because it WAS your favorite: this is a FRESH baby, and you wouldn’t give it the same name as your existing child. (If you would normally prefer not to repeat an initial within a sibling group, you can just pretend that’s NOT a preference for the sake of the game.)

• You can do as much or as little explanation as you like in your comment: you can just list the names you chose, or you can explain your process/preferences/reasoning/runners-up, or whatever is most fun.

Today’s letter is G. For a girl, I already have Genevieve on my list, and it was a finalist name for Elizabeth. I still like it, and it would still be a top contender. We also had Gillian/Jillian and Georgia on our list, and we considered Gwendolyn and Guinevere but more briefly / less seriously. My guess is that we would agree on Genevieve—but the name I most want is Georgia, so that’s what I’m picking for this game.

And for a boy, I already know: George! I want George. (We are only naming ONE baby in this game, so it’s fine to choose two names you wouldn’t use for siblings.) I would also want to consider Gordon and Gideon, but I wouldn’t end up choosing them over George. Gerrit is a family name, but with bad associations (it was part of a patriarchal naming tradition that, when broken, caused a family patriarch, named Gerrit, to reject his first baby grandson because the grandson didn’t have his name) (this is where naming traditions can go very, very wrong) (let’s not discuss it any further, it’s such a beautiful day).

Now you! If you want to! Only if it’s fun and not stressful! Feel free to adjust the game-play to be fun and not stressful!

For a girl I know immediately that I want to use Grace. It’s the name that got away for me. Once we named our actual son Gabriel, Grace was just to close when we finally had another girl.

I can’t think of a boys name that matches my typical style. But Giles seems appealing.

Since I have a Welsh grandfather, I will choose Gruffydd, pronounced Griffin. For a girl, I’ll choose Glenys, pronounced Gleeniz. Love Welsh names !!💙💖

I would choose Gilbert for a boy. Before I had kids, I got a rescue dachshund who the rescue named after the woman who pulled him from the high kill shelter. Her last name was Gilbert. And I didn’t want to change his name again and it was so funny to have such an “old man” name on a little dog but I liked it because of Anne of Green Gables. And that little dog was such a good, sweet, funny, loyal companion and I am so fond of the name. When I had my first child, I kind of wished I could use Gilbert for the middle name. Here was another small and adorable creature that I loved more than anything. But I didn’t want to be the person who named a CHILD after a PET. Well, I kind of did but I didn’t want the judgments and associations for me or my child that I feared would come with that. So in this game, I choose Gilbert!

One of my all time favorite names is Gwen so I would go with Gwendolyn for a girl. I do like Grace as well to that would be my second choice.

For a boy, I like Grant, George, Gordan, and Graham. But my favorite “G” name for a boy is Gavin so I think I would go with that.

I already have a G-named daughter, so wouldn’t duplicate an initial. But if I were forced, I’d choose Guinevere- total outlier but I love it. Genevieve (French pronunciation) is a close second. Giselle, Gemma, Greta, Gwen are also so lovely.

Gus has been a longtime fave, but doesn’t work with the surname. Grady was a name I hid away both my pregnancies so I think I’d choose that. Griffin is another fave. Graham is beautiful but I hear you say it differently in the states? Not Gray-um? For my first pregnancy we called the bump Garcia as a kind of joke, but I think I’d love to hear that on a kid.

    G: Guinevere
    B: Grady

Gideon! I forgot how much I love that name. I’d probably also consider Gabriel and Gavin. For girls, I really like Georgia! Grace is at the top of my list and the one I’d be most likely to name a real child. Both Giana and Gemma are names I’ve always thought are pretty, but I probably wouldn’t pull the trigger on them for undefinable reasons. Gretchen is a name I usually group with Bridgette and Meredith in my mind (who knows why?) and I like that style, but I’m not sure if Gretchen has the right sound/feeling for my actual tastes — it’s a lot of harsh consonants. But also I like the way it looks, written out. Hmm….

Final answer for the game: Gideon and Grace.

Gemma #1 for a girl, followed by Gillian. For a boy #1 – Gabriel. Briefly thought of Gerard and Griffin before I remembered Gabe!
Also, just a note that sometimes if I’m having trouble sleeping I think of names I like for the next letter, it’s a soothing mind activity!

I love several G girls’ names- Gloria, Greta, Goldie, Georgia… but I think I would go with Gloria. My husband doesn’t love it, but I love the idea of a little “Glory” running around!

For a boy I really like, Gavin Griffin and Giles. I think I’d go with Griffin.

I love Greta, Georgia, Grace, Gertrude (TRUDY!!), Gwen, Glory. I’d go with Grace: simple and elegant. I’ve always, always loved that name.

For boys, George, Gus, Graham, Garrett, Gilbert, Gideon, Gordon, Giles, Grady. I’m leaning Graham.

I was surprised to realize I like so many G boy names! Gabriel, George, Gilbert, Grant, Gregory, Guy…in real life, I think I would choose Gregory nn Greg. George would be a very close second!

For girls, I find both Geneva and Gianna very appealing, but they feel a little too “out there” for me; I tend to like plainer names. Instead I’ll go with Grace. It’s such a common middle name but feels fresher/more striking as a first name…. Actually, I just looked it up at SSA, and it was the #28 name in 2019 and has been in the top 100 since 1995, so I guess it’s more common than I thought! :)

I loved Grace as a kid. Then I married a man and took his last name and it’s a 5 letter word that rhymes with it. BUT now my 2nd oldest is seriously dating a young lady named Grace and she wants to take his name to escape her maiden name which is an adjective starting with G. Poor girl can’t win!
My favorite G for girls is now Gladys. Why can’t it come back into popularity?!?

For girls, I have a bunch of names that I don’t think I could ever truly bring myself to use, but which I like. Gwendolyn, Gloriana, Genia, and Garnet. I think the one I choose is Garnet, which is also a total style outlier for me.

For girls, I love Greta and Greer. Giselle, Giana and Grace make me extremely happy to hear on someone else’s babe. For me, I’m going to pick Georgianna. With my southern accent I pronounce it most like “George-ann-uh” but I also like the “George-E-ah-nah” pronunciation and all the ones in between. :)

For a boy, I can make a LONG list of favorites, including Gideon, Grady, Greer, Gray, Grant, Giles, Gilbert, Gus. But Our #1 name for “if we have a third” (spoiler alert – we are NOT having a third) is Graham. So I’m choosing Graham.

GRACE GRACE GRACE I PICK GRACE. Our chosen name if we had had a girl is Grace Beatrix, and Grace is my middle name, and I LOVE IT I LOVE IT SO MUCH. It felt briefly too trendy and then I thought I DON’T CARE I LOVE IT ANYWAY. If I wasn’t a FIRM NO CLOSE SECONDS on Grace, I would also like to consider Georgia and Genevieve.
For boys I pick George! I love George! In real life I doubt my husband would agree but the good thing about this game is that my husband’s opinion does not matter. Other boy G names I enjoy are Gordon (a family name), Gabriel (my oldest son’s name, and what I would pick were it not already picked), I like Gregory. I also have considered the name Grey as a way to name a boy after me (my middle name is Grace and my almost exclusive family nickname is Grey). I’m not sure if I would actually go for it because people actively call me Grey and I might find it confusing and/or be sad to lose my childhood nickname. I do like it as a middle name.

    G: George and Grace
    H: Harvey and Hazel
I: Isaac and Iris (honorable mention Isaiah)
    J: Jasper and Jane
    K: Kieran and Kathryn
    L: Leland and Louisa
    M: Matthew & Margot
N: Neil & Nadine (strong second place Naomi)
    O: Oscar & Opal
P: Patrick & Paloma (close seconds are Peter & Pearl)

    S: Sawyer & Sylvie
    T: Toby & Tabitha
    U: Uriel & Una
    V: Vincent & Veronica
W: Walter & Winonah (honorable mention to Warren)

Boy would be between Gabriel, Gregory, or Gideon. Gabriel is probably my favorite in full, but I dislike Gabe as a nickname, so I would probably go with Gregory, nickname Rory, which I love.

I want to pick Genevieve for a girl, but the two popular pronunciations would be an annoyance. Maybe Gabriella or Grace, then? But I don’t like that Grace is only one syllable, and Gabriella’s nickname situation is only mildly better than Gabriel’s. (And not a huge fan of Graciella.) So Gwendolyn? Gwendolyn.

I have long wanted to name a boy Gaius, but IRL, it wouldn’t work because he’d have a last name that sounds a little like Gallapagos, but without the “p” in the middle, and with Spanish pronunciation for the double “l”. I don’t mind alliteration, but the repeat of not just consonants but also vowel sounds would make him sound like a comic book villain. I used to love the name Gabriel, and could love it again, but it has negative associations on my husband’s side. I have been warming up to the name Gregory lately, and also like Graham. In real life, probably Graham would work best. But since this isn’t real life, I choose Gaius!

For girls, I like Gertrude, Gwendolyn, and Georgianna, though none quite enough to actually use. I think Gertrude is the closest, though, with the nickname Gertie.

“G” is another letter with at least three different pronunciations, but this time, I am not sure that I feel like there is a particular pronunciation that I would have to choose to feel like I was really choosing a “g” name. I find that I mostly only like the hard “g” for boy names, and that I have two favorite girl names, one with the hard “g” and the other with the soft “j” sound.

There are several names for both boys and girls that I like, even love, that I would rule out because they are not yet back in style or have been popular more recently and are fading. These include Gina and Gail/Gale for a girl and Gage, Glen, and Gareth for a boy. Other names I like on other people’s children that don’t feel quite like mine include Georgiana, Gia, Gianna, Giovanna, Giordana, Giuliana, Gillian, Galina, Galadriel, Greta, Gaia, and Glynnis for a girl and Garth, Grant, Grover, Gordon, Gideon, Gabriel (called Gabe or Gable), Garrett, and Geordie for a boy.

The serious contenders for a girl name would come down to Genevieve, Gwendolen, Guinevere, Gwyneth, and Gloria/Gloriana plus the two final favorites from which the actual winner would be chosen upon meeting the child: Gwyneira and Ginevra. I had a Christmas cactus called Ginevra that was stolen from my dorm room when in full bloom in the same year that the first Harry Potter book came out. But the plant was named for the Ginevra in the poem, not Ginny Weasley. I would never shorten it to Ginny. Maybe Evra or Evvie.

I loved the name Grady for my son, but two-syllable names that end in “ie” or “y” often feel two nicknamey to me for a given name, even when they are not nicknames. I found a Graydon on our family tree and thought it was great as a full form. Use Grady for his nickname as a child and Gray as an adult. Then, I realized that not only did it rhyme with Aiden and company, but it also was only one sound off from all the Grayson variations. So that killed it.

I’m pretty sure the Russian saint name Gleb would not go over well with English speakers, but it is sort of clunky cool. I also considered Gulliver for my son, but it didn’t have a good meaning. I love Gus, but I would use something like Augusten for a long form, and that’s not a “g” name. Gustavo is kind of cool as a long form, but maybe a little too bold? So that leaves me with Guthrie and Galileo. The former is another two-syllable name ending in “ie,” but maybe Gus would work as a nickname? I didn’t choose the latter for my son because of the religious connection to Galilee, but I love the scientist connection, and that it shortens to Leo, pronounced like Leia with an “o” in place of the “a.” It could have been an honor name for two of my favorite professors, one called Lev and the other a Dutch Leo, pronounced just like the end of Galileo. So, if I could get over the Galilee thing, my choice would be Galileo.

Girl: Grá, pronounced Graw – the Irish word for love. Could be short for Gráinne (Grawn-ya), which probably has a different root, or could stand alone, although it is rarely/never given alone on birth certs to the best of my knowledge. I’ve also become very fond of Greta, thanks to the indomitable Ms Thunberg.

I love Gabriel but would probably in reality play it a bit sfer with George.
For girls, hands down Genevieve. I love this name and love the possible nicknames: Gen, Ginny, Vivi…

For a boy I really like Gabriel and I think it works great in my sibling set, but my husband vetoed it with each pregnancy so I doubt I could convince him for #4. I’ve recently been seeing Gilbert pop up as a suggestion more and more and it’s really growing on me. It’s a tiny bit awkward with my last name, but not so much that I think I’d rule it out, and Gil is just so cute.
For girls there are a lot of G names I like, but the winner, today at least, is Georgianna.
