Baby Girl or Boy Kelly, Sibling to Piper and Felicity

Hi Swistle,

Husband and I are expecting baby #3, gender unknown. We already have two girls Piper and Felicity (last name is Kelly). Piper was named as soon as we found out she was girl at the ultrasound appointment. Felicity was named after she was born and from a list we went to the hospital prepared with. We originally thought we were going to call her Ivy but someone in town used the name 3 weeks before her birth date and I didn’t want two Ivy’s attending the same school with each other.

My family and friends think I’m a little crazy with my rules when naming baby #3. I don’t want another ‘P’ or ‘F’ name, I don’t want a name ending in ‘er’ or ‘y’. I prefer to stay away from names that have potential nicknames. I’m not a fan of common names and overused names.
My husband rather not talk about names a million times a week.
Names that are on my list that he hasn’t directly said no, or made a weird remark about are:

Girls: Cordelia, Violet, Sage, Raven, Scout, Esme, Rose and Arya
Middle name will either be in preferred order: Mary, Lynn or Suzanne (so right off the bat Rose Mary is not possible)

Boys: Ace, Dawson, Clarke, Lane, Holden and Theo
Middle name with either be in preferred order: Ross, Bud, Christopher (Husband loves that Bud is my grand-father’s nickname and for the longest time growing up I thought that was his real name)

Names that have been on the list but have been removed are: Rhys, Forrest, Gideon, Delta, Matilda, Whitney. My husband all-time favorite boys name is Cole… I can’t do do it, way to popular…. but I also don’t mind the idea of using Cole for a girls middle name….

Feedback on what you think of the potential list of names and any new suggestions are welcome. I just want that one name that stops me in my thoughts and makes me say… That is it!

Thank you,

Amanda

    From your list:

Girl: Sage (I like the simplicity of it paired with the other two names and your last name but not sure it pairs well with your preferred middle names)

Boy: Clark (no “e” because people will leave it off in the spelling) or Ace (again, like the simplicity of these). You can always call your son Bud no matter the name!

    My own suggestion:
    Jensen (boy)
    Amery (girl)
    Reece (girl or boy)
    Adria (girl)

    Three comments:
    1. I had a woman Cole in a course I was teaching this semester. It was fitting on a grown up person, and I think would cute on a little girl
    2. From your lists I like Clarke and Cordelia.
    3. For a girl, have you considered Wren? I have always loved this name, it is both spunky and pretty (also nature-y which seems from your list to be a possibility). I also think it pairs remarkably well with Piper and Felicity.
For a boy have you considered Duncan or Malcolm? They both seem like your style.

My husband refuses use Cole for girl and he thinks the middle name should stay has an honor name.

Actually, we were just talking about Malcolm over the weekend… maybe it’s a sign!

      Thank you for the suggestions

I really like the sound of a one syllable name with your sibling set too. Really like Sage and Lane from your list.

    Suggestions:

Eve, Jane, Mae/May, Hope, Ruth, Lark, Liv, Skye, Sloane, Gwen, Pearl, Blythe, Blair or Wren.

Dane, Drew, Finn, Flynn, Grant, Grey, Holt, Jude, Nate, Reed/Reid, Reeve, Jett, West or Zane.

I really like your husband’s choice of Cole!

For some reason Scarlett comes to mind. Piper, Felicity and Scarlett. Nice!

What about Beckett for a boy?

    All the best!

From your girl list I like Cordelia, Esme, Raven, Rose, Sage, & Violet. Suzanne is my favorite middle with most of them, except for Raven and Sage. For those, I’d go with Raven Mary and Sage Lynn. From the boy list I’d choose Dawson Ross or Clarke Christopher.

    And some new names…

    Boy: Ian, Tristan
Girl: Olive, Phoebe, Sloan, Eleanor (ends in r but it’s 3 syllables so the rhythm is different enough from Piper)

So I feel like we have a similar naming style. We almost named our third daughter Piper and I love almost all of the names on your list. Have you considered Magnolia for a girl? It has a similar sound to Cordelia and it’s definitely unique. We wound up naming our third daughter Magnolia and everyone LOVES it.

Yes, Magnolia is a beautiful name! We had a girl in town her daughter was named Magnolia and passed away this summer at the age of 2! I wouldn’t be able to use it for that reason!

    Finnegan, nn Finn
    Burke

I think Violet is perfect with the sister names. Violet Suzanne is my favorite, but Violet Mary is nice too.

For for boys I like Clarke or Dawson–although I think all of your options work. I think Ross sounds very good in the middle.

I love the name Cole for a boy, I didn’t realise it was that popular, I’ve never come across a Cole before but I’m in Australia so it might be different hear?

    Congrats and good luck.

I love Rose Suzanne or Rose Marilynn with your last name. Sage is great too! What about Brynn or Kaisa? For a boy, Lane and Holden seem nice with the surname and siblings. Other ideas: Tobias/Tobin, Marco/Marcus, Bryce, Ronan, or Lance?

I love your daughters’ names! If Cole is too popular for you (it was number 110 in 2016) I would get rid of both Violet (number 47) and Theo (Theodore was 83) even though I think they both work great!

I like Cordelia best, or Cora? I can imagine Cordelia being shoterned to Cora, which it sounds like you want to avoid. What about Della, similar to Delta? For boys I think Clarke and Holden sound great with the sister names!

I’ve since removed Theo from my list. Someone just named their baby Theodore…
Violet is popular but not around home, but not sure I love it enough to use it!
Would you be surprise to hear I already know a little girl named Della and Cora!

I’m surprised you think Cole is too popular. I only know of one little Cole, and it strikes me as pleasantly underused. Many of your other names seem more popular and trendy to me…but I suppose it could be regional. (For instance, there are two boy Dawsons in my son’s preschool class, and I know a third girl Dawson.)

I assume you’re not going with any particular “style”, since Piper and Felicity are pretty different stylistically, and your name options run the gamut. But some names that seem like they would fit your preferences…

    Chloe or Zoe
    Willow
I do really like Sage and Scout for you, although not sure about the middle names with them. These names all go better with Piper, though.

    For boys…Griffin? Jack? Max? Owen?

On the other side of the spectrum, more in line with Felicity, I like:
Abigail, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Grace, Juliet, Viviana
And for boys, Adam, Benjamin, Oliver, Sebastian, Thomas

But it seems like those names are less your overall style.

    Good luck!

I like the fact that Piper and Felicity are both word names, but come across as “name names” first.

From your list of girl names, Sage seems like the best bet for continuing this pattern. (Rose and Violet also fit, to a point, but have a more traditional feel. Raven pulls the sibset more in the direction of “word-word names”, to me, although I like it.) For middle names, maybe Sage Mary-Lynn?

I was going to suggest Calla, following the same line of thought, but Calla Kelly: probably not. Following in the same (mostly botanical or related, since you mention several botanicals but haven’t got to use any) vein:
    Iris
    Hazel
    Marigold
    Olive
    Eden
    Robin
And moving slightly further away from word names:
    Stella
    Vita
    Gemma

From your boys’ list, I like Holden and Theo the best.

I am partial to Cordelia from your list and with your girls’ names. I wonder if you would consider Cecilia if Cordelia doesn’t quite fit? I also think Rowan seems more in line with Piper and Felicity than Raven.
From your boys list, I love Clarke, and Holden is a close second. I would tack Graham onto the consideration list.
    Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions! I actually like Celia more than Cecilia. Rowan is the name of my cousins daughter! Thanks, Holden i think is inching it’s way closer to the top of the list… decisions, decisions!

I came across this post looking for a girl (cat) name to go with my dogs Piper and Chloe. I surprisingly read all the comments and now… Must know what you named him or her!
