Baby Boy or Girl Graves, Sibling to Maxwell (Max)

Melanie writes:

I really need help with a sibling name to go with our son Maxwell Christopher.

Need both boy and girls names

Our last name is graves

I feel that as maxwell is always shortened down to max and my name melanie is always mel and my husband Christopher is always chris the new arrival should follow the same.

I would love the middle name for a girl to be Tegan and I don’t know about the boy.

Thanks for your help

Because you have two M names in the family, it would be fun if this new baby could be a second C name. I don’t generally try to coordinate children’s names with parents’ names, but it can be a fun exercise when it’s hard to know where to start. So here are some C names that might work:

Caitlin/Caitlyn (Cait)
Calla (Cal)
Callie (Cal)
Camilla (Cam)
Camille (Cam)
Campbell (Cam)
Camryn (Cam, Bell)
Cassandra (Cass)
Cassidy (Cass)
Clara (Clare)
Clarissa (Clare)
Colette (Cole)

Caden (Cade)
Callum (Cal)
Calvin (Cal)
Camden (Cam)
Cameron (Cam)
Cason (Case)
Charles (Chaz)
Colby (Cole)
Coleman (Cole)
Colton (Cole, Colt)
Cooper (Coop)

If the C name idea doesn’t appeal, here are some more possibilities to consider:

Annabel (Ann, Belle)
Aubrey (Bree)
Brianna (Bree)
Brinley (Brin)
Delaney (Del, Lane)
Eleanor (Elle, Nell)
Elena (Elle)
Elizabeth (Bess)
Ella (Elle)
Emerson (Em)
Emilia (Em)
Emmeline (Em)
Eva (Eve)
Finley (Finn)
Gabriella (Bree)
Isabel (Belle)
Jaden (Jade)
Josephine (Jo)
Julia (Jules)
Katherine (Kate, Kay)
Kailey (Kay)
Olivia (Liv)
Penelope (Nell)
Rebecca (Bec, Bex)
Sabrina (Bree)
Samantha (Sam)
Skylar (Sky)
Tessa (Tess)
Vivian (Viv)

Alexander (Xan)
Bennett (Ben)
Henry (Hank)
Isaac (Ike, Zac)
Jacob (Jake)
Jayden (Jay)
Joseph (Joe)
Kyler (Ky)
Lucas (Luke)
Nathan (Nate)
Nicholas (Nick, Cole)
Samuel (Sam)
Theodore (Ted)
Wesley (Wes)
William (Will)
Wilson (Will)
Zachary (Zac/Zack/Zach)

For a boy a boy I like Samuel (Sam) with Maxwell (Max) or Andrew (Drew) with Maxwell (Max).
For girl I like the idea of a C name. My first thought was Charlotte (Lotte) or Caroline (Carrie). I think Teagan could go with either of these names.

Hmm.. it’s hard to guess at your taste with only Maxwell to go on.

If you like the idea of a C name: Cassandra or Cassidy w/ nn. Cass or Cassie. Coraline, Coralynn, Coralee w/ nn. Cora. Coleman/Coleson – nn. Cole. Clayton – Clay. Callum/Callahan/Calvin – Cal?

Melanie and Maxwell both have 7 letters, so you could do an 11 letter name to match Christopher? Christianna nn. Christi or Anna. Kimberleigh – Kimber/Leigh. Macallister – Mac, Al, Alister. Beauxregard – Bea. Theophilius – Theo.

To only have Maxwell to go off of, I’ll give you some names that we like since my daughter, had she been a boy would’ve been a Maxwell.

    Girls:
Juliet/Juliette (Jules). Out daughters name and we absolutely love it.

Rosetta (Rose, Rosie, Etta) could also use other variations of Rose. So Rosalie, Rosemary, Rosalina, etc

    Brigette (Ette)
    Anabel (Anna, Belle)
    Emmaline (Emme, Emmie, Emma)
    Vivienne (Vi, Vivi, Vienne, Vienna)
    Charlotte (Lottie)
    Violet (Lettie, Vi)
    Theodora (Thea, Dora)
Georgia and variations. Georgina, Georgiana, Georgette. (Georgie, Gina, Ana, Ette)

    Boys:
Oliver (Ollie) our son’s name and same thing, we absolutely love it.

    Simon (Si, Sims)
    Jacob (Jake)
    Charles (Chuck, Chaz, Charlie)
    Oscar or Oswald (Oz)
    Walter (Walt)
    Louie (Lou)
    Sullivan (Sully)
    August (Gus, Augie)

Good luck and keep us posted!

I really like swistle’s suggestion of Annabel…Annie is super cute with Max. (Or Anna!) I also like Augustine….nickname could be Auggie, Gussie, Teeny, etc. My other suggestion would be Lillian, nickname Lily.

Nothing comes to mind for boys. Haha. I always have an easier time with girls’ names! You’ve gotten some great suggestions, though! From swistle’s list, I like Samuel/Sam and Theodore/Theo the best.

    Good luck!

    With Maxwell (Max), I like

Jonathan (Jon), Bennett (Ben), Wesley (Wes), Cyrus (Cy), Vincent (Vin), and Oscar (Oz)

    Or

Catherine Tegan (Cat), Eleanor Tegan (Nora), Louisa Tegan (Lou) Romilly Tegan (Ro), Phillipa Tegan (Pippa).

I agree that with only Maxwell and Tegan to go on, it’s hard to know where to start. I do kind of like the idea of another C name for balance, but only if you don’t plan on having another child. I also noticed your son already has Christopher as a middle name, which makes me want to give this baby’s a name a nod in your direction.

Have you considered Tegan for a first name if it’s a girl? Perhaps then you could do Tegan Melanie. That leaves you without an obvious nickname though. Or maybe you could do something with the “mel” element for the first name and keep Tegan in the middle. Emelyn (Emme), Melissa (Lissa), Amelia (Amy, Lia, Millie).

Other possibilities for a girl that I like are Cassandra (Cass/Cassie), Anabel (Ann/Annie/Bell) & Eleanor (Elle/Nora)

For a boy, maybe Clayton (Clay), Griffin (Finn), Bennett (Ben) or Coleman (Cole) all seem really nice. Maybe you could also use a “mel” name for his middle. Mel, Melvin, Melville?

For a boy, I love Swistle’s suggestion of Calvin nn Cal. Its too perfect. Maxwell and Calvin, both have that quirky feel. Max and Cal. Great sibset.

For a girl, I don’t love any of the C -suggestions Swistle had, but I do like the idea of using a C. What about Charlotte nn Char, Carolyn nn Cary or Carol, Chloe nn Chlo, or Calliope nn Cal (love!!! again.. Cal for boy or girl :) )

I like Calvin, Samuel, Henry, August. and Isaac with Maxwell–Max and Hank or Max and Gus are particularly great together! Other suggestions: Timothy, Thomas, Edward (Ned, Ted), Gabriel, Sidney, Ezekiel (Zeke), Harrison (Harry), Jameson (Jay or Jamie).

For girls, I would like Katherine (Kate or Kit), Sabrina (Bree), Cecelia (Cece), Miranda (Mira), Evelyn (Evie), Virginia (Ginny or Gigi), Dorothy (Dot or Dolly), Beatrice (Bea), Abigail.

    For girls, I like:
    Juliet Tegan Graves (Jules)
    Cassandra Tegan Graves (Cassie)
Lily Tegan Graves [or Lillian Tegan Graves]
    Camila Tegan Graves (Cam)
    Carissa Tegan Graves (Riss, Cari)

    For boys:
    Theodore Graves (Theo)
    Julian Graves (Jules)
    Sebastian Graves
    Cameron Graves (Cam)
    Caspian Graves (Cas)
    Patrick Graves (Pat)
    Fitzgerald Graves (Fitz)
    Jonah Graves (Joe)

Tegan could also work for a boy’s middle name, but doesn’t go great with any of the boy names above.

    What about…
    Raphael Tegan Graves (Raph)
Raph and Max sound a bit similar though.

If I had a Max, I would go with:

    Max & Kate (Katherine/Catherine)

    Or

    Max & Charlie ( Charles )

    Good luck!

Thank you for all your comments! We’ve since found out were having a boy! Funny you say about the C bit as on my shortlist are Carter and Cameron! I also really like Spencer and Dh loves Parker.

I just feel none of them have a strong nn

I’m really drawn to surnames it appears :)
