Baby Girl Nicewinter

Molly writes:

We are having our second daughter in August. Our first daughter is named Avery Nicewinter. Here our our four favorite options (and we aren’t set on any of them). I would appreciate some opinions!

1) Hazel (and call her Zelle)….Hazel was my grandmothers name. I would love to use a family name but we would call her Zelle.
2) Addison (and call her Addy). We think Avery & Addy sound cute together.
3) Brooklyn (I don’t want to shorten to Brooke, so we would always call her Brooklyn).
4) Mira

Thanks so much for any help!

Let’s have a poll, over to the right! [Poll closed; see results below.]

Edit: Welllll, FLIP. It looks like the poll is slightly defective, in that it is not actually accepting votes. WT? I’ll leave it up for the time being and we’ll see if the issue resolves; in the meantime, leave votes in the comments section.

How about Mira Hazel? I LOVE the name Mira: it’s the name of my 3-year-old granddaughter (Miranda called “Mira”).

Would you pronounce Zelle as “zell” or “zelly”? (just curious because sometimes that final “e” is not silent, e.g. Bette Davis)

I think Zelle is such a cute nickname for Hazel; and I love both pronunciation possibilities :)

I voted for Mira because I love that name – but the poll wouldn’t take my vote. I know this because Mira is still at 0 even though I voted three times for it! I do think Avery and Addison are cute together, though they might be a little too matchy. I do like Hazel too. I don’t love Brooklyn.

I voted for Hazel, but I do like Mira, too. What tipped me into the Hazel camp was the family connection. Brooklyn would be my third choice and Addison last.

    Hazel is so, so charming.

But Avery & Mira are so complimentary (both have that tantalizing ‘r’ sound)!

My vote would be for Mira Hazel… what a wonderful homage to your grandmother.

    Best wishes to your family!

I vote for Hazel. I love it. Avery and Hazel is a beautiful siblingset, and Zelle is a sweet nn for Hazel. (My second choice is Mira; Avery and Mira is absolutely lovely too.)
(Maybe you could take your final two choices to the hospital and see what she looks like?)

As others have said, the poll isn’t working. When I voted for Mira earlier today, my vote was accepted. But now the results show all votes for Mira. I tried to “change” my vote and voted for Mira again — but that didn’t work. So best to disregard the poll results.

My vote is for Addison, second vote for Brooklyn, third for Hazel. Love the nickname for Hazel. I just think the other two sound more like sibling names to Avery.

I love Hazel. It’s a sweet, beautiful name, the nickname Zelle is spectacular, and the family connection is a huge bonus. I also think Mira is lovely; it’s easily my second choice. Both are wonderful choices with Avery! Personally, I find Addison/Addy a bit too close to Avery for my taste. Best of luck!

I vote for Hazel. A beautiful classic name with a family tie in. I’ve not heard of the nickname Zelle for Hazel, but I really like it.

I don’t love Hazel at all and wouldn’t pair it with Avery. Hazel sounds so old to me — and not in a classic way, while Avery sounds very modern, contemporary. I would use Hazel as a middle name with any of the other 3 names:

Addison – very trendy right now; Avery and Addy are cute together for 2 little sisters, but maybe too cutesy when they’re older?

Brooklyn – another modern name like Avery; might be shortened by her eventually to Brook (cooler teen name maybe)

Mira – well-known name but not overly popular (ranked 807 in 2009 SSA Top 1000 names; Addison was 12 and Brooklyn 37); has a modern sound to it and sounds well with Avery

Personally I like Hazel best but I would vote for Mira as it seems a good style match for Avery. Both contemporary names but not trendy. Whereas Hazel seems more traditional.

Brooklyn and Addison are too trendy for my taste. Plus I don’t think Avery and Addy go well as a match because Avery is three syllables and Addy is two. Amy and Addy would match much better if you get what I mean.

I know a little Hazel, and at first it was hard to imagine on a little person, but she has blossomed into the name well.
I have nieces that are Addilynn and Avarie.
I think my vote, given your last name is Hazel.
Our baby girl is coming in August too. She will be Indigo Joy. Keeping this anon b/c we refuse to tell anyone else the name!!
