Baby Boy or Girl Markword, Sibling to Amel!@ M0rn!ng

Hello Swistle!

It’s been 8 years since I last wrote to you, but we are (finally) expecting again! Here’s the post about my daughter, who is almost 8 and the joy of my life:

https://www.swistle.com/babynames/2010/11/21/baby-naming-issue-someone-else-has-the-same-name/

I can’t tell you how helpful you and the commenters were. I treasure those words.

We are currently expecting another baby, sex unknown, due in late February, and feeling very ambivalent about names. Maybe because we struggled for so long (5+ years of infertility, less than 1% chance of having children on our own) or because I’m subconsciously trying to protect myself, or in denial about finally being pregnant, I just don’t seem to be able to get excited about naming. We aren’t finding out the sex, because after lots of medical intervention (IVF), control, and knowing all the stats and info about my reproductive abilities, I just wanted to give this baby some privacy and let there be a tiny bit of mystery about this pregnancy. I mean, we have photos of it when it’s literally a blastocyst. I want to have a delivery room surprise, and although my husband and daughter want to find out the sex, we haven’t so far.

Our last name sounds like “Mark-word”. Our older daughter, as noted in link above, is named Amel!@ M0rn!ng. Sometimes we call her M!illy. Here’s our short list:

For a boy, Jake, after my dad (who paid for our IVF cycle, and has 3 daughters, bless him). I like that it’s not complicated, given our long last name. Not sure if he would have a middle name, as my dad does not. We are considering Heywood (another honor name) as the middle name, but “Jake Heywood” seems borderline too cowboy, even for living in the midwest as we do. We’re pretty much decided on the first name but open to feedback on that, and the middle name situation.

For a girl, a short list:
Sylvia (husband doesn’t love, but I have liked it for years. I like that we would have 2 A initials – me and my older daughter – and 2 S initials – the baby and my husband)
Eleanor (classic, and an honor name, but not inspiring me)
Olympia (rad, but is it too much? I like the -ia suffix with Amelia, feels tidy)
Harriet (or Harriett)

middle name contenders (all honor names): Summer, Louise, Molly

I am open to thoughts on these names, or new ideas. I don’t care for gender neutral names like Harper, Parker, etc (although, as a teacher, know many lovely children with these names – just not my personal taste).

Also, I’ve been dreaming about names for years and now that I get my chance I’m not that into it! What on earth? Has anyone else had this situation?

Thank you for you excellent work! And good luck with your move.

Anna

My absolute favorite option would be for you to repeat what you did with your first child’s name: a relatively familiar first name, and then a surprising middle name. I don’t feel strongly about it if the baby is a boy, but I feel fairly strongly about it if the baby is a girl.

I think Jake Heywood Markword is great for a boy: a little tongue-tangling to say the whole thing (the repeating D and K and W sounds, and the similarity of -word/-wood), but you’d hardly ever say the whole name, and I think honor names are well worth it—particularly if you’re considering an alternative of not giving him a middle name at all. It doesn’t seem too cowboy to me—just enough to give it that smack of rugged coolness.

For a girl, I’d want to look for something approximately as familiar as Amelia: it doesn’t have to be Top Ten, but I’d look for something with that same feeling. Eleanor would be perfect if you loved it more. Sylvia seems good too, though it is quite a bit less common than Amelia; it helps that it is a familiar name even though it is not currently in high usage. Harriet is a name I like very much, but for some reason not with this particular sister name and surname. Olympia is indeed rad, but soooo much less common/familiar: it’s not even in the Top 1000. For comparison, in 2018 there were 11,800 new baby girls named Amelia, and only 62 new baby girls named Olympia. It isn’t that sibling names must coordinate in popularity or style, but from Amelia to Olympia is a startling leap. Still, the matching rhythms and matching -ia endings do help bring them together.

Hm, I seem to be demolishing your list. No, wait: I am in favor of both Eleanor and Sylvia. I particularly like Sylvia if we can bring your husband around to it, since you like it much more than you like the name Eleanor, and you like the A and S initial pairings and the matched -ia endings. Another name that would fit these preferences is Sophia. Amelia and Sophia. More candidates that have either S- or -ia and seem to me that they’d work well in familiarity/style:

Julia
Lydia
Olivia
Sabrina
Sadie
Stella

More candidates:

Charlotte (not sure about repeating -ar- sound with surname)
Clara
Clarissa
Cora
Elise
Evelyn
Grace
Jane
Josephine
Lillian (potential for Milly and Lily)
Lucy
Natalie
Noelle
Nora
Rose
Victoria

But then! How oh how will you ever repeat the triumph that is Amelia’s middle name? I remember when you sent that update, how the middle name was such a pleasing surprise! Do you think it’s repeatable? How did you come up with M0rn!ng, and can you go back and do the same thing again? And I am very much looking forward to the comments section on this one. Let’s experiment a little in the meantime:

Charlotte Liberty
Cora Sunrise
Eleanor Spring
Evelyn Story
Jane Olympia
Josephine Marigold
Julia Clover
Lillian Valentine
Lydia Wish
Natalie Magic
Nora Sunshine
Olivia Brighten
Sabrina Glory
Sadie Amethyst
Sophia Hyacinth
Sylvia Clarity
Victoria Starling

I do think Summer would work, too. It is not as surprising as M0rn!ng, but it is a pleasingly similar word name. Perhaps if the first name ends up being quite a bit less common than the name Amelia, the more-familiar middle name Summer would help balance things; plus, I do love honor names. Ooo, maybe something like Amel!@ M0rn!ng and Sylvia Summer, or Amel!@ M0rn!ng and Sabrina Summer.

Update:

Hi again!

First of all, thank you a million for answering my question, and thank you to all the sweet, sweet commenters. It has helped SO MUCH getting all the positive feedback.

I had to email you back and tell you how we came up with our older daughter’s middle name, because I think it changes the trajectory of the naming process (ok, maybe that’s an overstatement. But it will help clarify I think). M0rn!ng is actually my husband’s great-grandmother’s name. She died when he was a young adult, and they were quite close. So when his dad, Amel!@’s grandfather, was a little toddler, they all lived together, and when he woke up every morning he would stand at the top of the stairs and yell “Morning!” (as in, good morning) because he couldn’t get down the stairs by himself in his footie pajamas, and she was always the one who would come carry him down. So he thought her name was morning, because every time he called, there she was. My husband didn’t realize that wasn’t her actual name til he was like 18 or something!

SO. Morning is an honor/family name (which, as you can see, we are big on – my husband and I both have honor names ourselves). Our Amel!@ M0rn!ng was actually born at 5:26 pm :) I don’t think I would have used such a…”free spirited” name, but the fact that it’s a family name and feels balanced with the more traditional first name makes it feel right. I’m actually loving the comments on the recent post, as I feel like we’ve tapped into a very specific naming niche.

Anyways. Thanks again. You are the best!

Anna

Name update:

Hi Swistle!
Here’s Amel!@ M0rn!ng with her new sister, Sylvia Summer!

We picked Sylvia because we loved it and thought it went well with all of our names, and Summer is the middle name of my best friend since second grade, who attended Sylvia’s birth as my doula and has just been all around amazing support during our infertility journey (and before). Thank you all for your thoughts and ideas!!
Lots of love, Anna

I like Sylvia Summer, but can I just throw out Chelsea Dawn? It’s the title of a song, and it ties in with Amelia’s middle name. I like that it has the ee sound with having ie or y for the ending.

I like a two-syllable name for your boy choice.

What about Jaclyn as an nod to your father if the baby happens to be a girl, with the nickname of Jackie? It’s very close to Jake without being gender neutral. I’m a big fan of Jaclyn Summer.

How about some other options that sound like starlets:
    Eloise Summer
Simone Heywood – Milly and Mo :-)
    Evangeline Jake
    Susannah Summer

Or would the spelling Elinor be more enticing or Sylvie instead of Sylvia?

I also like the idea of Jake Heywood or even Jake Summer!

Don’t beat yourself up about not feeling inspired. After knocking it out of the park with baby girl #1 and waiting so long for baby #2, you’re bound to feel it’s a challenge and a bit protective of your heart. Congrats! Can’t wait what perfect name you land on when the time is right.

I , too, hope your husband comes around to Sylvia because it seems perfect for you. I also liked Swistle’s idea of Stella, or using Olympia as a middle. Maybe not with Sylvia as that’s a lot of ia in one name, but Stella Olympia is a great name and goes well with Amelia Morning. I like Eve as a middle, too. It would give the girls a subtle connection in their middles. Sylvia Eve Markwood. Stella Olympia Markwood.

Or how about Alexandria? Alexandria Eve Markwood. I like how it starts with a vowel and ends with ia, like Amelia. If Millie and Allie is too matchy, and I think it might be, maybe Millie & Alex?

Gosh I love Olympia too, and with your hard-won pregnancy I feel like this baby needs a victorious and triumphant name!! You could always do that by a daring middle, like Eleanor Glory (girls are then morning glory as middles!). Eleanor of Aquitaine is also such a force in history I wonder if a proper badass namesake would bring the name up from lukewarm.

I also think names like Gloria, Victoria, Veronica work really well as firsts. More common than Olympia. My absolute favorite would be Athena-the image of her mother spinning inside Zeus’s head and her emerging fully formed seems like such a great metaphor for this journey! Amelia and Athena!

If I remember correctly, Serena Williams named her daughter Alexis Olympia, so maybe it won’t be that unfamiliar at least to some tennis fans:)
From your list I like Sylvia best. Sylvia Glory Markwood would be an awesome name!
(But I also like the idea of Winter as middle name.)
I would also add Alice, Cecily, Susannah, Juliet, Francesca, Miranda, Nicola, Olive, Penelope, Rosalind, Elisabeth, Edith or Vivian as possibilities.

I think you have a lot of perfectly good names, but the one that really jumps out at me is Olympia in the middle. I like that it’s as “rad” as Morning, but something you came to organically rather than by pouring over a list of names that might go with Morning. Also, maybe there’s some symbolism to Morning as your first child and Olympia as the summit.

I initially thought that Olympia as a middle might rule out -ia names for a first…but actually, Sylvia Olympia is great.

Olympia Summer seems beautifully balanced with Ameli@ M0rning.

There’s also Louise Fairlight. You get an honor name with the approximate level of familiarity as Ameli@, an unexpected middle, AND a classic moniker that is as cool as her sister’s.

Jake Heywood is thumbs-up all the way!

Huge congratulations on your little one and best wishes!

Me too! I love Olympia Summer.

I have 2 daughters , one with a top 20 name and the other a not-in-the-top-1000 name—but the names have other things in common. They also both have honor middle names. The popularity discrepancy bothered me when choosing my second daughter’s name, then not at all since then.

Recently, some friends named their daughter Hazel Sunshine. (Sunshine is after the grandma, it’s her nick name.) I think it’s adorable, honor name or not. I think it goes with Amelia Morning!

I love that your little ones nickname makes her first and middle alliterative, which I feel like is more special. Milly M0rning is charming and sounds like a super hero name. Could you do the same with the next little? Sylvia Song, or if you wanted to nickname Sylvia (I feel it could nickname is Sylvie or Vivi) Vivi Vesper is pretty too and would directly model her older sisters name.

What about Jacoba for a girl? It’s quite a bit less popular than Amelia but feels familiar (like Jackie) and could tie to your father’s Jake without sounding contrived. I also like the surprising sound of it, it feels cozy to me. Jacoba Markward, Amelia and Jacoba.

1st of all congratulations! I’m sure that the time, energy and heartache you’ve gone through to get here has made getting excited over a name difficult. But I’m so glad you’re adding to your family after wanting to for so many years.
I am going to disagree with swistle that I want you to use a similar pattern of familiar first name, unexpected middle. I LOVE your daughter’s name but that doesn’t mean this child should match, in fact, I think if you’re trying to match it too much it’ll just kind of water down each name…. does that make sense?
Jake for a boy is a great idea. I like middle names so I find myself hoping you give him one. Heywood is so handsome. I don’t love it with your last name but since it’s meaningful, it gets a pass. I also love Jake Summer. Why does summer have to be exclusive to girls? Also a play on summer, you could do Jake Somerled. Or find a middle name with a great meaning that is a nod to how badly you wanted this child.
I love the idea of Jacqueline for a girl to honor you father. Jacqueline Louise or Jacqueline Summer. Both sound so beautiful.
Above all I want to encourage you not to stress. I’m certain that you’ll know what feels right when you meet this little one. Though I completely understand why you want this baby’s gender to be a surprise… it may be part of why no name seems right… it all seems so abstract right now. I’m not saying you need to find out the sex, but maybe the name won’t fall into place until you meet baby and know you’re welcoming a son or a daughter. I have 3 kids. We had names selected each time for both sexes before we found out. 2 out of 3 times, once we found out the sex and it seemed more real, we changed the name. (Just the middle name for child #1, just the first for child #3.)
    Good luck!! Please update us!

One more thing, if you do go the route of dropping the honor middle name and using an unexpected one, my vote is Patience. It’s such a guilty pleasure name for me. I think it’s lovely. And after waiting for this child for so long, I think it’d be such a meaningful, amazing choice for you. Jake Patience, Jacqueline Patience, Sylvia Patience… it sounds great with everything!!

My friend and I have discussed the idea of sisters named Elizabeth Marvel and Eleanor Whimsy… and I love them each on their own, too. Since Eleanor is on your list I figured I’d throw it out there! :) (And my blog is called Harriet Louise, so I feel like we have similar tastes – so maybe Whimsy wouldn’t be too crazy for you?!)

Ameli@ Morning and Eleanor Whimsy. Swoon.

Sylvia Whimsy is nice, too, though I do prefer it with Eleanor.

(I get that this might be too much for some parents because of a noun and alliteration at the same time but… I like it. :)

    Eleanor Nimble
Amelia and Eleanor, Ameli@ M0rning and Eleanor Nimble
(I just really like the word nimble, it’s a fun sound. :D )

    Harriet Larkspur, Charlotte Larkspur
(Wasn’t too fond of Larkspur with Sylvia or Eleanor, but I like it with these names. Might be clunky with the last name?)

    Sylvia Birdie
Amelia and Sylvia, Ameli@ M0rning and Sylvia Birdie

I really, really, REALLY love the idea of Twilight – Eleanor Twilight, Sylvia Twilight, Fiona Twilight, Clara Twilight – so many wonderful options. But is the book an issue still?

I want to suggest Dusk, like Eleanor Dusk or Sylvia Dusk, but that might be too matchy with Ameli@ M0rning? Sylvia Dawn is also very nice but same issue. And Midnight! Gahhh! Sylvia Midnight!! I honestly might just throw caution to the wind and let there be some matchiness if it were me, because Sylvia Midnight is great.

I think there’s also the possibility of changing it to Sylvie, which may open up more doors for middle names sound-wise. But I’m getting carried away and having too much fun here. :) Good luck and congrats on your baby!

Instead of Sylvia, what about Sylvie? It sounds a little more modern to my ear and goes better with Amelia in my opinion, despite the non-matching endings. Amelia and Sylvie.
I am so a fan of your daughter’s middle name. Just a random thought, but when I was a teenager I decided on the name Matilda Cloud for a future daughter. I never did end up using it but I think it is so beautiful and would pair nicely with Amelia’s lovely name!

I was quite tempted by Sarah Saturday while pregnant with my daughter. I love that song :)

I also think Eleanor pairs nicely with a masculine name such as Jake. I know you said that’s not really your style but it wasn’t and isn’t my style either and I somehow ended up with an Eleanor Davey – haha!!

It seems like you pretty much have things sorted out for a boy—and my vote is yes on the middle name.
For a girl, I actually do like Olympia in the first name spot, with my second favorite being Sylvia. With Olympia you could use the nickname Oly (Ollie) which is so cute with Millie.
I also love Swistle’s suggestion of Josephine. Someone suggested Wonder for a middle name which is just lovely. I think Dare is a fun middle name as well. Olympia Dare. Sylvia Dare. Josephine Dare.
I also wonder if Harriet isn’t quite right, maybe Henrietta (Etta!) would work?
Also another fun idea if you have a daughter is to give her the middle name Jake.
Congratulations! I look forward to an update :)

Elodie Lyric – ends and starts w the same letters like Amelia. Middle name repeats the first letter like your older daughter. :)

Eloise Lyric – all the same as above but Eloise is a bit more popular

Melody Summer – I like this combo and how it goes with your older daughters name.

Cynthia Summer – ends in ia – alliteration (sound) without the same letter

Oh man, I do love the name Olympia. It’s uncommon, but as a Mainer, I have always loved it. (Home to awesomely named former senator Olympia Snowe.) Olympia Evening. Olympia Twilight. I think when siblings are 8 years apart it is normal for parents tastes to drift a little. I definitely don’t think Ameli@ and Olympia are jarring together. I think the names are really pleasing together both starting and ending in vowels. It should be very familiar to people, at least how to spell/pronounce, because of olympics, Mt Olympus, the Senator etc. It’s just such a cool name I hope you use it.

My suggestion for an exciting middle is Vesper. A fun pair with M0rning, beginning and end. To me the name is “catholic girl gone Bond.”
Someone else mentioned Patience which I’ve always loved.

I know you are not into gender neutral names, but what about Jake as a middle for a girl? A wonderful honor that spices up otherwise traditional girls names. Sylvia Jake or Olympia Jake.

Jake Heywood Markword is an awesome boy’s name. Check!

I like Olympia, and Sylvia (Sylvie), and the suggestions of Wonder and Starlight for middles. Maybe Olympia Wonder is too much? but…

    Sylvia Starlight
Sylvia Moonlight — there’s a passage in Anne Lamott’s Operating Instructions (I think) when she’s first brought her son Sam home from the hospital and she’s just staring at him because he’s so perfectly amazing and beautiful, and she sums up the feeling with: “He was like moonlight.” Oh, the swooning.

I didn’t read every comment, so sorry for any repeats, but have you considered any of these?:

    Amelia and Lydia
    Amelia and Juliet
    Amelia and Cora
    Amelia and Clara
    Amelia and Olivia
    Amelia and Lillian
    Amelia and Lily
    Amelia and Stella
    Amelia and Thea
    Amelia and Felicity

I think any of them would be so beautiful next to Amelia. I also agree with Swistle that Sylvia and Eleanor would be great choices (Eleanor would be my pick, but if you like the two -ia endings, go for it!)

As far as middle names, I’m going to make a guess that Amelia was born in the morning? Gorgeous choice. I think you could use a birthstone (Garnet for January, Amethyst for February, Aquamarine for March) or just the name of the birth month as a really stand-out middle, or Winter/Spring depending on when exactly she arrives; Snow if you get a snow day baby; Patience, since you waited so long; Valentine would be cute for a Valentine’s day baby; Iris, which was the personification of the rainbow, and I think a nice name for a long-awaited child.

Actually, Iris would be really cute as the first name too. Iris Louise? Amelia and Iris.

Overall I like Felicity, Iris, Stella, Lydia, and Juliet, if you decide against Eleanor or Sylvia. Good luck and congratulations!

I like Sylvia very much for this baby, if your husband can grow to love it as well. As middle names, “Spring” and “Promise” seem to capture the same spirit as “Morning”. Sylvia Spring; Sylvia Promise.

Jake is the perfect boy name, sounds great with Amelia, and nice to honor your dad. I’m not loving Haywood only because it is hard to say with your last name. I think if you already have Summer on your list as an honour middle name then it is the perfect middle name for you to match with Morning. They both have that happy and lighthearted feeling and they are both a family honour name. Tick tick.

I like all the names on your list but perhaps if you go with Summer as a middle then maybe Olympia Summer doesn’t work too well because of Summer Olympics, I also agree that it is very different to Amelia but they may not bother you.

I love the name Harriet and I think Amelia and Harriet go perfectly together. Milly & Hatty…swoon!
I also think Eleanor and Amelia are very perfect together too Milly & Ellie.
I like the suggestion Sophia or Sophie and Charlotte and will also suggest
    Hannah
    Eliza
    Abigail
    Chloe
    Phoebe

This may be the sweetest update picture I’ve ever seen. Such precious sisters and I love the drawing! 💕 I really love the symmetry of the girls first and middle names being alliterative. Welcome, Sylvia Summer!
