Baby Girl Myth-with-an-S, Sister to Henry and Grey

Hi Swistle. I need help naming my baby girl who is due at the end of January.

I love naming other people’s kids but have had the hardest time with my own. I have identical twin boys named Henry and Grey. Our last name sounds like the word myth with an S in front (think: the second most common American last name). When naming my twins, I specifically didn’t want matchy names- especially because they’re identical. I thought/think they balance each other nicely. Henry grounds Grey and Grey modernizes Henry (though Henry is trendier than I anticipated) in my mind. Adding a third name to the duo has me stumped. I feel like one twin name will be the outlier in style depending on which direction I go with a girl name. We will most likely have a fourth child. I used to think I cared more about a well-coordinated “sibset” but my taste in everything else leans a bit eclectic so I have let that go a little bit. A name we love is most important but I also want to like it with the boys’ names. Popularity statistics don’t always translate to real life in my experience so I’m not overly concerned with that either. Though, I think I can safely say I wouldn’t ever want to use a Top 10 name. That said, my girl name list is still all over the place and I’m having a hard time committing. My husband doesn’t really contribute names, he just says yes/maybe or no but is pretty easy to work with. I feel like no progress has been made for a while, though. And now I’m finding myself pretty apathetic about the whole process and I’m not sure why. Have I not found the right name? Do I need to see her first? When we finally settled on Grey and Henry (and their corresponding A and B middles) it was like the stars aligned and it felt just right, like I had solved a satisfying puzzle. I’ve not had that yet. So here is the list:

Perry- A longtime favorite of mine. My husband likes it but isn’t certain it’s “the name”. Probably my front runner but I’m second guessing myself. I like that all kids will share E, R, and Y in their names. Name websites put it in the “crotchety old man names that are cute for girls” section but to me it seems more akin to the Poppy, Posey, Piper set (all names I like, just not on my short list). EDIT: After writing this a childhood friend of my sister named her baby girl Perry! We were so surprised. I NEVER hear this name. She lives in my parents’ neighborhood and goes to church with them and we share many friends and acquaintances in common (and on social media, which is an eyeroll but also reality). I just don’t think it’s usable anymore. She’s very nice and might not mind but it would be startling, I think, for most people to hear me use it a couple months after her. I’m sad but my mind is 99.9% made up that I can’t/won’t use it. I just loved the flavor of this name.

Quincy- Super cute to me. My husband likes it. He prefers Quinn but doesn’t mind a longer given name.

June- Love this name. It’s the month of our anniversary. I’m having a hard time fitting my preferred middle names with it (but that’s not a deal breaker). I also don’t love a one syllable first with a one syllable last name but it’s also not a deal breaker. And I find myself especially attracted to one syllable names so I’m not fighting it.

Hattie- A cute family name. I don’t love the idea of shared first initials, but again, not a deal breaker. This one was well received by my in-laws and my husband had a more positive/enthusiastic reaction to it, as well.

Campbell- Another longtime favorite (before I even had kids) but I’m not sure it’s the one. I love surname first names. I though it was out of the running but my husband brought it up the other day and I remembered how fond of it I am so it’s back on.

Wren- Too similar to Henry? My husband isn’t sold. I love this name. It seems like the perfect girl name to me. But maybe not with my last name?

Greer- Too similar to Grey? There is a small town in our state called Greer that has a lot of meaning for us, especially my husband. I thought I gave up this name for Grey. I felt it was more important to name the male baby I did have versus the female baby I might one day have, which was the right choice. But I’m regretting it now, to an extent.

Frances- Another family tree name. The idea of a little girl nicknamed Frankie makes my ovaries glow. And I love every nickname for Frances. I’m just not sure Frances feels like my baby. But I want it to. The feedback I get when I mention this name is mostly forced smiles, raised eyebrows, and polite nods, which gives me pause.

Names my husband has definitely vetoed: Winnie, Louisa, Elouise, Caroline (he likes the nickname Coco but not Caroline and there are no other long names for Coco that we like), Fallon, Ivy, Arden, and Ada.

If this baby was a boy I was set on Roman. My husband liked Silas (though was worried about all the S sounds with our last name).

What would you choose from our list now that Perry is out? I decided June was my definite pick and have been telling people that’s her name but now I’m not so sure. I feel like I need to meet her first maybe? But I’m open to more suggestions. Nothing could make me more indecisive at this point- ha! Though I’ve entered and re-entered all these names into Nameberry and looked at similar names and lists of names containing my search I am left feeling like there are some I’ve missed or overlooked.

Thanks!

I’d be interested to know how many of us, seeing Henry and June together, think of the 1986 book or the 1990 movie. It seems like a faint connection, and you’ve been crowd-testing the name presumably without anyone bringing it up and you crossing it off the list as a result—but on the other hand, I have neither read the book nor seen the movie, yet I made the association and I know the gist of the plot. On the other-other hand, the names Henry and June ought to be familiar enough to have many associations beyond those. But back to the other hand, for me it’s like Will and Kate: each name separately doesn’t make me think of the royal pair, but the names together immediately do. But back to the other-other hand, it makes me feel sad to consider removing June. It’s such a great name. And I like the way it’s a word name like Grey, but more in the style of Henry, tying it to both.

Wren does feel too similar to Henry to me. And Greer does feel too similar to Grey to me, in appearance as well as in sound. I don’t think that means you CAN’T use them, but the slightly surprising similarity would be part of the package deal of the name.

Let’s see. If we do remove those for similarity, and if we also remove June, we’re left with: Quincy, Hattie, Campbell, Frances.

I love Frances/Frankie so much, and it seems to me that glowing ovaries is a very good sign. I also love that it’s a family name.

I might remove Hattie for its similarity to Henry: not just the starting H, but also the ending y/-ie.

Quincy and Campbell both seem like good options.

I’m interested in the split between the surname/unisex type names on the list (Perry, Quincy, Campbell, Greer) and the more traditional/girl names (June, Hattie, Frances). Do you find yourself leaning more toward one group or more toward the other? Would you be fine with a name from each group if your fourth child is a girl (Quincy and Hattie, for example, or Campbell and Frances), or would you prefer to have both names from the same group? The Campbell and Frances pairing appeals to me in this way: that Campbell has the feminine nickname Cammie, and Frances has the boyish nickname Frankie. Well, of course this doesn’t need to be decided right this minute, but I do think it can be helpful for the narrowing-down process.

Let’s go back to some of the names that are ruled out or might be ruled out, and see if we can find more options.

Perry is an interesting one. The sound to me is light and feminine; the look is out-of-style boy name. I’m also interested in the way the rhyming names are out of style: Barry, Carrie, Gary, Jerry, Larry, Mary, Sherry, Terry—except for Harry, but even that isn’t extremely popular. I wonder if you would like Percy, or Winslow. Percy may be too familiar as a boy name because of the Percy Jackson series. Winslow reminds me of Campbell in that it has a good feminine nickname (Winnie). Oh, but Winnie is on the veto list. Hm.

I’m finding it difficult to think of names similar to June. Jane and Jean and Joan spring to mind, but none seems sufficiently similar, and Jane with your surname seems almost tongue-in-cheek. Well, you know, maybe Joan, now that I think of it longer. I would definitely be ready to hear Joan again, and it has that little zing of surprise. Henry, Grey, and Joan. I do like that.

Or Sloane. Very different in style, but I thought of it because of Joan. Henry, Grey, and Sloane.

Or Luna. It has some similarities in sound, but the style is quite different. Henry, Grey, and Luna.

Rose is a name that’s in my own “similar to June” file, but such things are so subjective. Henry, Grey, and Rose.

Maybe Ruby? Henry, Grey, and Ruby. They all end in -y, which is interesting. Ruby has four letters (and could be considered a color) like Grey, but has two syllables like Henry. I love it with your surname.

I continue to be drawn to the idea of using a name that is a word name like Grey, but is more in the style of Henry. Something like Wren, June, Rose, Ruby. Pearl? Henry, Grey, and Pearl. Opal? Henry, Grey, and Opal.

Lane or Laine? Henry, Grey, and Laine. Cute nickname Laney/Lainey.

I wonder if you’d like Isla. Henry, Grey, and Isla. I might feel a little pressure then for the next child to have a name starting with F or J, to keep all the initials in that little section of the alphabet.

Lark is similar to Wren. Henry, Grey, and Lark.

Mirren is a bit like Perry, a bit like Wren. Henry, Grey, and Mirren.

That makes me think of Minerva, one of my own favorites. Henry, Grey, and Minerva.

Or maybe Cleo? Henry, Grey, and Cleo. Minerva and Cleo both feel to me like adding a third style, which gives you the Happy Assortment in sibling names, instead of having two of one style and one of another style.

The name Greer makes me think of Brooke Shields’s daughter Grier; her other daughter is Rowan. Henry, Grey, and Rowan. Though that rules out Roman if your next baby is a boy.

Name update:

I had the baby this week and we decided on June. We went to the hospital knowing it would be between June, Perry and Campbell. It was an obvious choice once we got to see and meet her- it fits her perfectly. I really appreciated reading everyone’s responses!

I think Frances June is adorable…June is a great MN with many of your options if you’re doubting it as a first name.

I love June and Frances so much, and Swistle’s suggestion of Percy.

One name that occurred to me was Wynn – similar to Wren, one syllable, shares the y with both boys. Might be hard to resist the nickname Winnie though, but throwing it out there.

And then… Wynn makes me think of Brynn, which makes me think of Blair.

    Congratulations!

I love this one because I have a similar naming style! I look forward to seeing your responses!

Quincy/Quinn/Wren- I love all of these names so I’ll go ahead and suggest Jency and Gwen as alternates.

Campbell- I don’t think you could go wrong here!

June- what about Juniper and nickname her June?

Frances- what about Winifred and nickname her Fred?

I know Swistle suggested Sloane but what about Malone? Henry, Grey and Malone Myth?

    My own additional suggestions:

Henry, Grey and Gretchen (totally think Gretchen is underused)
    Henry, Grey and Gentry
    Henry, Grey and Emsley
    Henry, Grey and Elsie
    Henry, Grey and Jolie
    Henry, Grey and Hollyn
    Henry, Grey and Amery
    Henry, Grey and Celeste
Henry, Grey and Linden or Lindy

To pick ONE from your list, I’m going to go with Henry, Grey and Campbell!

Frankie belongs in your family! I really like Quinn but it may be too popular for your taste. I especially like “Princess Caroline” nee Coco. She is going to rule the world. Might as well embrace it.

What about variations of Frances … I rather like Francine. Francesca may have broader appeal. And since both your boys names are rather nickname proof, if you are going to call her Frankie why not just name her Frankie/ Henry, Grey, and Frankie seem to work well together.

I do like something a bit unexpected with such a common last name. Hattie would be a good choice but it does seem very similar to Henry. I agree that shouldn’t be a deal breaker if that is your favorite name.

Like Swistle, I think an old-fashioned word name would tie in nicely with both boys names. I like Ruby and Pearl best from Swistle’s list. Other great choices to consider are Daisy, Iris, Willow, Hazel, Violet, Fern, or Clover.

I love Lark, especially with your surname.

In the vein of avian names (and because your last name is such a blank canvas opportunity, and because I personally love noun names), two more that might be too out there:

    Dove
    Kestrel

June made me think of July. July Myth-with-an-S.

    1. RL

I also like Lark! But the avian bent reminded me of a rather uncommon French name that I nonetheless have heard here in Paris: Colombe, which means dove. This could get you to the nickname Coco, but also Dovie, if you wanted as another poster suggested.

Thinking of you these last couple weeks!

Could June just be The One but this is the common last minute jitters? I don’t think you need to worry about a one-syllable first, especially as you have a Grey already and presumably that doesn’t bother you. And the middle names not fitting, eh, work around that, you seem creative and that’s likely the least of your worries.

I love Quincy and Campbell for you too. Sounds like your husband is on-board with the surnames so go with it? Maybe because this is a different pregnancy, it’s a different process and you need to wait to meet her? (I met a little girl named Perry last year and totally swooned, it would have been lovely to use but I agree it’s unusable now.) Hadley, Delaney, Gable, Monroe, Sawyer, Twain, Bronte…

Your mention of liking the Rey connection list made me think of Meryl. That’s an oldie that seems to fit effortlessly with the set. Henry, Grey & Meryl.

I do love Pearl from Swistle’s list. Might be because I know a 5yo with the name and seeing it on a live, spunky, creative girl has made it totally usable.

Good luck! Can’t wait to see where you land.

From your list, I like Frances the best. Frankie is such a cute nickname for a girl (especially one with two older brothers…she’d be able to feel like part of the boy gang when she wants, or have the girly Frances for when she doesn’t).

I like Swistle’s suggested Lane (one of the names on my list with my last pregnancy) or Cleo. I think both work really well with your boys’ names. Though choosing a name like Lane – or Lark or Ruby – to me would rule out using another word name for a fourth child. Then Henry would be the only one without a word name.

All the best in choosing a name!

I like June and Frances best from your original list, followed by Campbell. In case any vetoed names come back into play, I like Caroline and Ivy in this sibling group. From Swistle’s suggestions Rose and Ruby seem promising to me.

How about Anna, Ella, Morgan, or Sarah?

So many great suggestions. I think Henry and Grey have a slightly more elegant/classic sound together that I would want to continue. Frances totally falls into that–or Francesca (love–my daughter is Harriet Francesca with a family spelling)), or Harriet, nn Hattie. Saying Harriet Frances still, six years later, makes me swoon a little bit.

Other more classic sounding names include June–my favorite from your list.

If you like Coco, maybe you would like Mimi and Miriam is a very elegant and lovely way to get there.
Emmie can come from Emmeline, another winner name.

I also love all the Mae names: Mavis (gorgeous), Maelyn, etc.

Anyway, you have such great names picked you can’t go wrong. My favorite for you is June or Frances. Good luck with your delivery!

I love love love Frances! It was on my list. And a favorite of mine that I’ll never get to use (all boys here): Phoebe. Classic, spunky, and so fun to say.

Also, some of our most loved books are the Frances books by Russell Hoban. Seriously delightful.

JUNIPER. It has the freshness of Grey but the classic nickname June to go well with Henry. It also eliminates the one syllable issue. I love love love it; it has a lot in common with Wren, I feel, along with the spunkiness of Perry.

Oh also for what it’s worth, I never even thought of Henry and June connection. The most common June / Joon association for me, is Benny and Joon. A friend of a friend has a Penny & June and I think that’s a bit comical but it’s a not super well known movie and I’m nobody, so who cares?

Scrolling to the end to comment. Use JUNIPER. First, you can use the nickname June. Also, Perry could be a natural nickname without it being weird with a distantly-connected Perry. Juniper aka June aka Perry. So cute!
Juniper fits nicely with both Henry and Grey.

Frances or Francesca both delight me. A surname that I’ve heard and liked is Callahan, nn Callie or Cal. But I also like Calla. June is lovely with your boys’ names, and so is Pearl. I really like the idea of not having her name end in a -y, just because it will make naming a fourth child feel like you need to stay with it.

As I write this, Pearl is really growing on me. Pearl June. I’m thinking of a June bride wearing a string of pearls. I love it.

I think you have a lot of great choices and can’t go wrong with any of them.

What about Juniper? It has some of the whimsy/modern feel of Grey, but could nickname to June-which has a more traditional feel like Henry.

I do like Wren, but agree it’s a mouthful with Henry. Maybe another uncommon bird-name like Dove? Or another uncommon nature name? Clover comes to mind for some reason.

I would personally avoid boys on girls or more unisex names with brothers called Henry & Grey. I think something like Henry, Grey & Quincy sounds like 3 brothers.

I love Swistle’s suggestions of Luna, Ruby & Pearl.

Huh, just re-read my post and realized that everything I like for you is a nature name.

I think of both Perry and Campbell as male, surnames, coming back for females. So if it can’t be Perry, I’d go for Campbell. Sloane also fits in this category to me, and since Swistle got to it via June-Joan-Sloane, that could be a great pick.

    Reply
  24. Dwd

I personally wouldn’t use a unisex name for a girl that has 2 older brothers. I’d want a clearly feminine name, though a boyish nickname would be cute. I like Frances nickname Frankie. But I LOVE June. Have you considered Junia? You can still use June as a nickname if you wish, but it’s multiple syllables and eliminates the Henry and June association (which I didn’t make.) And I feel like it’s a different category than Henry (classic) and Grey (modern) since its really old but has always been rare. Good luck.

I agree! Henry is very BOY and Grey is a very different style, so I think having a Perry or Campbell would be like, OK third boy of varying name styles. Frances nn Frankie or Frannie works well as a naming style.

JUNO. I know a little girl with this name and it is just the spunkiest. And sounds great with your last name, and includes lovely little nickname June.

I think you have lots of lovely choices. My only thought is I would stick with a more feminine name because if you pick a unisex/more male name for your daughter I would think Grey was a girl (since it is used for both). Henry, Grey and June are clearly boy, boy girl to me. Henry, Grey and Campbell is boy, girl, girl to me.

I have 3 children, two of whom are named Henry & June. In nearly 5 years, exactly ONE person has commented on the connection to Henry Miller book, and it was to compliment us on our ode to literature (not what we were going for, but okay). I think we might hear it more if we only had 2 kids, but the 3rd name deflects attention from the name set “Henry & June”. BTW, our 3rd is Margaret (nn Maisie), since we seem to have similar tastes in baby names.

If you’re worried about the single syllable, I agree with other commenters that Juniper or Juno would be great. We actually started out with Juniper but decided simply June worked better for us.

Like Swistle, I also love Lark for you. Or maybe Larkin. Frances is also great, especially since it’s a family name. You have so many great options!

    Two things:
I know a fourth grade girl named Junia. She is the most demure, respectful, lovely little lady. Junia would be a nod toward your anniversary, give you three syllables in her first name, AND feel familiar without being popular.

My teenage daughter recently told me her favorite name for a girl is Meryl. So I back that suggestion as well! That’s where the name fashion is going.

And one more item (sorry): CONGRATULATIONS! And best wishes! :)

Okay, first, I love Henry with Grey! I would never have put them together, but they work so well! Secondly, I kind of skimmed the letter so I missed the part that baby #3 was a girl and when I got to Perry and Quincy I thought “wow those boy names go perfectly with the other boys”. Then I got to June, and I was confused. I reread and saw that you are expecting a girl. I think Perry and Quincy both read boy to me, especially with the other boys names both ending in y. I love love love JUNE for you. It goes so well with the boys names, yet is decidedly feminine.

I started reading the comments but definitely didn’t get to finish them.

    From your list:
I love Quincy which can be easily shortened to Quinn if wanted.

    I also LOVE love June.

I also love how much you love Frances. Who cares if people you’ve run it past have given some “raised” eyebrow looks. It’s your kids. And if you love it and love Frankie then that’s all that matters.

    Other suggestions that I love:

Absolutely LOVE Ruby. I think it fits in perfectly with the boys names.
Henry, Grey, and Ruby. The three look fabulous on paper. They all have different sounds/combinations that they don’t sound matchy-matchy. I love that Ruby shares the R and Y with the boys but has it’s own distinct vowel/letter.

I love the suggestion of Meryl. It actually reminds me of a friend named Marlys (mar-liss).

I also really like Winslow. And Percy. Percy definitely gives me the same feel as Perry.

Ugh. You have so many good options. I think I would try and look at Grey and Henry, which have two distinct styles/feels and use it as an opportunity that you actually have more options to use for girl names vs. being stuck in one style. I think it’s less of an issue if you choose a more trendier name or else a more traditional name because this baby is a girl. Often families do have a different style for their girls and boys.

Good luck and definitely keep us posted.

I love Francis, and Juniper that is being tossed around is lovely also. I would sadly remove Hattie since it is usually a nickname for Harriet or Henrietta both of which seem far too close to Henry.
Wren was one of my girl name short lists, and I love it, but as you say Wren and Henry are hard to say together. The other names on my list were Sonia and Eugenie, you might like them as well
I wonder if you would like the name Pearl?

Frances is the name of one of my great-great-grandmothers, so I think it’s ripe for a comeback. Other women’s names from that era in my family are Olivia, Ruby, Agnes, Evelyn, Adeline, Eva, Laura, and Sara which have all come back by now.

I also really like the name Hattie. It gives me a warm glow inside. Doesn’t go well with my surname, or I would add it to my own list. It’s a fresh-vintage take on the popular Maddy (so the overall sounds are familiar). Quincy also livens and brightens such a familiar surname, and I love both June and Jane (considering them in middle slots). June Quincy S-Myth immediately brings to mind John Quincy Adams but Quincy June S-Myth doesn’t have that connotation.

I’m commenting to mention that Sloane in a sibling set with Grey immediately makes me think you’re a big Grey’s Anatomy fan (Meredith and Lexi Grey, -and Mark Sloane, and the hospital is Grey-Sloane memorial, I think). Not that anyone will necessarily make that connect down the road…

I also like Juniper or Juno, but that’s been covered above.

Oh, wow! Loving the suggestion of Fern!

Fern reminds me of Fleur too!

What about Lucy (love), Marnie, Saffron (adore this one!), Lydia or Iris?

Heard the name Leanna on a little girl today. Really like it!

    Still loving Frances!

I know you said there were no long names for Coco that you like but wanted to throw one out there just in case you hadn’t thought of it yet – we know a little Corina whose nickname is Coco and I’ve always really liked it.

I immediately thought of Miller (Millie or Mila as a nn)… Since ya seem to like surnames as well as more girly names, this accomplishes both. Parley is in the same family as Perry, and it goes well with Henry absolutely, both popular in the same era, but maybe not so much with Grey. Still, a great unisex name!
